How to Get a Job at a Pharmaceutical Company

By Jodi Morse, Yahoo! Contributor Network

Jobs at pharmaceutical companies are considered some of the hottest on the market at the moment. With the recent discoveries of new influenza viruses, such as the bird flu and swine flu, the world is going to need vaccinations for years to come. This is not to mention the amount of drugs that are produced by the United States each year. This is why most pharmaceutical jobs are highly rewarding. You will likely receive high pay, great benefits and, most importantly, job security. Here are some tips on how to get a job at pharmaceutical company.

Know What You Want to Do

There are many different types of jobs at pharmaceutical companies. For example, most pharmaceutical companies need salesmen. The right candidate would be someone who has a lot of sales experience, and is willing to travel around the country or even internationally in order to make sales for the pharmaceutical company. Pharmaceutical companies also employ technicians who work to produce the drugs and vaccinations being made, as well as people who package them. Know what you want to do so that you can research the job qualifications that the pharmaceutical company sets forth for the specific position.

Consider Attending College

Since jobs in pharmaceutical companies are in such high demand, they are often very competitive to get. While it is going to depend on the specific job position that you want in the pharmaceutical company and the qualifications for it, there is a good chance that you may need to attend college. Often, you can get away with earning an associate's degree from a community college, at least to get your foot in the door. In order to pursue a higher job position in the pharmaceutical company, you will need to earn a bachelor's degree or master's degree. Keep in mind that the type of degree that you will want to choose depends on what you want to do. Those interested in sales may consider a degree in economics, advertising, or communications. For most other positions, degrees in sciences are often ideal.

Apply With a Temp Agency

Many pharmaceutical companies hire workers through temp agencies, such as Manpower. If you are trying to get a job at a pharmaceutical company, this can be very ideal. While you are going to be earning less pay than you would have if you had been hired by the pharmaceutical company directly, this can be a great way to get your foot in the door. If you prove that you are a good worker, the pharmaceutical company may choose to hire you permanently in the future. Those who have not attended college but have at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent will benefit the most by applying through a temp agency.

Getting a job in a pharmaceutical company can be challenging, but it is important to know that it will be worth it in the long run. While you may need to do a lot of things before you will be able to get a job at one of these companies, the high pay, great benefits, and being able to know that your job is not at risk in the near future will definitely make up for it. Don't lose hope or get stressed out. It will be worth it if you can secure a job position at a pharmaceutical company.
