Associate Scientist/Scientist - Cell Isolation
The job details are as follows:
What We Do
United Therapeutics Corporation focuses on the strength of a balanced, value-creating biotechnology model. We are confident in our future thanks to our fundamental attributes, namely our commitment to quality and innovation, the power of our brands, our entrepreneurial culture and our bioinformatics leadership. We also believe that our determination to be responsible citizens - having a positive impact on patients, the environment and society - will sustain our success in the long term.
We currently have five approved products on the market and a long-term mission of providing an unlimited supply of transplantable organs for those who need them.
Our company was founded by an entrepreneur whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition. She sought to find treatment options and a cure for her daughter and patients like her. We are founder-led, and relentless in our pursuit of "medicines for life". We continue to research and develop treatments for cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, pediatric cancers and other orphan diseases.
In 2021, we became the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation (PBC). Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through (a) the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and (b) technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs. At the same time, we seek to provide our shareholders with superior financial performance and our communities with earth-sensitive energy utilization.
How you’ll contribute
The Associate Scientist - Cell Isolation (RML) will conduct and assist in research efforts to develop novel cell and cell-based products for treating pulmonary hypertension and other lung diseases.
- Perform literature searches and apply prior experience to independently identify and test strategies to isolate different cell types from primary human lung tissue, with a primary focus on establishing methods to isolate lung endothelial cells
- Implement process development strategies to improve reproducibility and quality of cells from existing cell isolation methods
- Independently design sound experiments to establish culture methods for lung cells isolated from human tissue, with a key focus on lung endothelial cells. Execute experiments with support from team members.
- Routinely sort cells aseptically using MACS-based purification instruments. Develop strategies and execute experiments to optimize purification strategies for cells isolated from human lung tissue.
- Manage partnerships with organ procurement agencies and be on-call to acquire human lung tissue for processing
- Contribute to managing operations for large-scale isolation of cells from human lung tissue, including procuring materials to support isolation and purification runs, tracking use, and projecting needs. Serve as an in-lab team lead and scientific advisor on tissue isolation days
- Routinely perform bioanalytical assays to characterize cellular phenotypes for isolated cell populations (flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, or other). Regularly analyze flow cytometry data.
- Use scientific literature to identify new markers to characterize cellular phenotype. Screen antibodies and implement assays with newly identified markers.
- Efficiently follow prescribed laboratory methods and protocols under GLP/GMP-like conditions
- Author and review scientific communications, inclusive of laboratory protocols, patents, publications, and regulatory filings
- Support tech transfer activities to external research or manufacturing organizations for isolation, expansion, and characterization of human lung cells
- Analyze data and reach sound conclusions supported by experimental findings. Compile data summaries to evaluate outcomes of cell isolation processes and identify areas in need of optimization. Use data summaries to propose strategies for cell isolation efforts.
- Regularly compile and present data to laboratory staff and program leaders
- Record laboratory data in the in-house data management system in a timely manner
- May manage a small team of lab personnel
- Other duties as assigned
