The Position

Responsible for leading legal support function for procurement/supplier contracting for the Novo Nordisk U.S. Affiliate.



Reports to Chief Counsel – Legal Strategy, Operations and Corporate Transactions. Collaborates across Legal Department. Also interacts and collaborates with individuals in other Novo Nordisk Inc (NNI) departments, global headquarters and affiliate companies as well as outside law firms.


Essential Functions

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of primarily buy-side/supplier contracts – such as master service agreements, technology/SaaS, and consulting agreements - in support of a broad range of company functions and activities, including Marketing, IT, Clinical, Research, Operations, Patient Support Programs, etc.
  • May support and assist in special projects or in contracting for other complex business transactions, including real estate, business development, and corporate governance
  • May provide general legal support for other corporate functions such as Tax, IT, Finance
  • Supervise, train and lead team of high performing contract specialists; appropriately manage and triage heavy team workflow and serve as escalation point for internal contracting related matters
  • Collaborate with Global colleagues, including those in Procurement and Legal, in developing global framework agreements
  • Partner in the development and implementation of an efficient and streamlined contracting operations framework, including necessary policies, procedures, guidance documents and workflows; drive and lead legal implementation of evolved contract lifecycle management process
  • Develop, maintain and update contract template library and contracting playbooks; identify and develop new contract template types
  • Continually and proactively identify and drive opportunities to optimize and improve contracting processes
  • Proactively identify contractual risks and mitigating actions
  • Advise internal stakeholders and other attorneys on contract interpretation and dispute resolution
  • Keeps informed of new laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting the company and pharmaceutical industry
  • May retain, manage and assist outside counsel as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by senior management
  • Performs job function and duties independently with minimal oversight and guidance from managing attorney


Physical Requirements

0-10% overnight travel required.


Development of People

Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.



  • A Bachelor's degree, JD degree and state bar admission required
  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department advising on, drafting/negotiating, and managing buy-side/procurement contracts in the life sciences/pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred
  • In-house legal experience in life sciences or pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry, e.g., fraud and abuse, government contracting, privacy, advertising and promotion, scientific exchange, etc. required
  • Experience working in a CLM system, such as Coupa, preferred
  • Proven track record as a strong team player with ability to work cross-functionally in a complex organizational structure and in a matrix support model with shared responsibility
  • Ability to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced environment while partnering to set business-appropriate priorities with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience supporting contracting needs in a business-minded, pragmatic, and solutions-oriented manner
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills – able to effectively collaborate and communicate with client groups within the company and at all levels of an organization
  • Able to make business-intelligent risk assessments of various contract types, proposals and arrangements taking into consideration potential legal risks applicable in the life sciences/pharmaceutical industry
