Summary of Job Duties:
The medical physicist for proton therapy will support clinical operations at the Proton Center of Arkansas while contributing to the center's initiatives in quality and clinical improvement. Reporting directly to the Director of Proton Physics, the position is responsible for supporting physicians, dosimetrists, and therapists in all aspects of treatment planning, dose calculation, and quality assurance to ensure safe and effective patient care. Responsibilities include providing clinical physics coverage for daily proton treatments, performing commissioning, calibration, and patient-specific and routine QA for treatment planning and delivery systems, and maintaining imaging devices. The incumbent will contribute to projects involving surface imaging, dual-energy CT implementation, motion management, and the integration of new technologies and techniques for proton therapy. In addition, the physicist will collaborate closely with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, therapists, and engineers to promote efficient workflows, continuous quality improvement, and program development, while supporting the center's initiatives in safety and clinical innovation.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MSc or higher in Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Graduation from a CAMPEP-approved Medical Physics Residency Program
  • ABR Certification or Eligibility in Therapeutic Radiological Physics

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the proton beam delivery system is properly commissioned, calibrated, and configured for clinical use. For example,
  • Collaborates with dosimetrists, radiation oncologists and therapists to review/verify treatment plans, perform patient-specific QA for proton treatments, ensure accuracy of dose delivery and image registration.
  • Establishes standard operating procedures (SOPs), conducting routine (daily/weekly/monthly) QA checks on beam delivery, imaging systems, treatment planning system, record-and-verify software, and maintaining necessary documentation.
  • Ensures the proton therapy facility meets all applicable radiation safety guidelines (state/federal), overseeing environmental/work-area monitoring, ensuring safe use of radiation, and assisting with internal audits.
  • Evaluates new proton therapy technologies (such as pencil beam scanning, adaptive therapy, proton arcs), upgrading software, testing new beam modes, and supporting clinical research/innovation.
  • Trains and mentors physicists in training, dosimetrists, therapists and other staff.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards, working closely with radiation oncologists, dosimetry and therapy teams.
  • Contributes to a team-based cancer care environment.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
