MANTECH seeks a motivated, career, and customer-oriented Predator Biologist to join our team in Lompoc, CA. This is an onsite position.
The MANTECH Natural Resources Lompoc Team focuses on the monitoring and removal of confirmed and potential avian and mammalian predators to threatened and endangered species.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Utilize a variety of techniques to minimize predation of threatened/endangered species, e.g., trapping, relocation, hazing, and hunting
- Use adaptive management approaches to explore innovative predator management techniques to improve species survival
- Manage both native and non-native predator populations to minimize predation pressure
- Investigate predation events to determine the predator(s) responsible to help guide management of predators and perform mammal trapping or dispatch as required
- Deploy and maintain trail cameras
- Coordinate with other biological monitors and project staff
- Attend meetings as necessary to provide updates on predator control activities, data entry, and assisting with report writing
- Occasional overnight shifts will be required to hunt mammalian predators
- Must be able and willing to access field sites throughout San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties
- Candidate will work up to 70% of the time in the field, and up to 90% from 1 March to 30 September, and will be based in remote, coastal areas (work vehicles are provided for travel to work sites)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field and 4+ years of professional experience in wildlife biology with an emphasis on predator management or bachelor's degree with 4+ years of personal predator management experience might be substitute for professional experience
- Firearm experience (a skills assessment will be performed)
- Ability to quickly identify avian and mammalian species by sight and through binoculars, and at night through thermal or night imaging equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field with 4+ years of professional wildlife biology experience with a focus on predator management
- CA Hunter's Education License
- CA Trapping License for furbearing or nongame mammals
- Federal 10(a)(1)(a) permits for CA wildlife species
Physical Requirements:
- The candidate must be comfortable working outdoors, hiking rugged, uneven terrain often at night, and may encounter typical field hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other nuisance species
- Occasionally lift and haul weight up to 50 lbs
- Operate 4WD and other all-terrain vehicles occasionally trailering heavy loads while using GPS to navigate in remote settings
- Ability to remain in a stationary sitting position up to 50% of the time. Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, or to communicate with co-workers, management, and customers, via email, phone, and or virtual communication, which may involve delivering presentations
The projected compensation range for this position is $68,500.00-$114,100.00. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
