We are seeking an enthusiastic scientist to join the Cytometric Profiling group and Flow Cytometry/FACS core facility at Merck Research Laboratories in South San Francisco. Candidates should have experience with flow cytometry theory and practice, especially with BD Biosciences instrumentation. Experience with cell sorting is also highly desired. This position requires the candidate to perform FACS core responsibilities such as daily instrument startup, shutdown, QC, and maintenance. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have good working knowledge of the hardware, fluidics, and optics involved with flow cytometers. In addition to these core activities, the candidate will conduct immunoprofiling of various human, non-human primate, and murine tissues by flow cytometry and/or cell sorting to support team efforts to develop early pipeline immunotherapies. The candidate will work with program team members as well as with other intradepartmental groups to contribute data for regulatory filings of the many new therapeutics entering the clinic. Importantly, this position requires a candidate who has excellent oral and written communication skills and who will enjoy working with a large group of scientists.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:
• Minimum of a BS/BA in Biology, Biochemistry, or relevant discipline plus 3-5 years of industry experience or MS/MA in Biology, Biochemistry, or relevant discipline plus 1-2 years of industry experience.

Required Experience and Skills**:
• Experience with Flow Cytometry, preferably with BD Biosciences flow cytometers and acquisition software (FACS Diva)
• Data analysis using FlowJo
• Cell biology or immunology background
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Proficiency with MS Office applications on the Windows operating system
• Must be able to lift a 20-Liter box of sheath fluid (~45 lbs. each)

Preferred Experience and Skills:
• Cell sorting (FACS)
• Cell preparation for single cell RNA-sequencing
• Ex vivo functional assays such as proliferation, phospho-flow, or intracellular cytokine staining
• New analytical methods such as tSNE, viSNE, CITRUS, FlowSOM, etc.
• Proficiency with TIBCO Spotfire
