Sr. Research Associate, Upstream Process Development

Vir Biotechnology is seeking Sr. Research Associate to join a fast-paced interdisciplinary team passionate about process development of our HCMV viral vaccine vectors. This person will develop methods for the production, purification, and testing of new technologies and products.




    • Optimize vaccine vector production, purification, and process validation.
    • Execute laboratory experiments with general supervision, including process development and optimization studies to improve virus yield and purity
    • Perform viral vector production and purification runs at different scales
    • Draft and execute experimental protocols and document results
    • Carry out analytical testing as needed to support process development efforts, such as virus titration and impurity assays
    • Develop process controls, analytics, and batch records for production.
    • Participate in the development of patent applications, publications, and documentation to support regulatory submissions.
    • Serve as internal specialist working closely with multi-functional functional teams and external partners (CMOs, Suppliers, etc.).
    • Advise senior management and assist with tech transfer to CDMOs


    • BS/MS/PhD in a scientific or engineering field
    • BS +4 years, MS +2 years, PhD 0years' experience in industry
    • Experience in aseptic mammalian cell/virus culture with bioprocess operations in closed culture system techniques preferred.
    • Capabilities in downstream process development, such as harvest, purification, filtration, and cryopreservation processes.
    • Knowledge of cell based and molecular analytical methods including ELISA, Western blot, immunofluorescence assays, viral titers, transfections, and PCR preferred.
    • Ability to apply process engineering principles for scale-up and scale-out of bioprocesses that enable multi-site process development and manufacturing.
    • Experience developing cGMP compliant processes and working within a quality system desired.
