The Novo Nordisk Research Center Indianapolis, Inc. (NNRCII) supports our global mission to transform the treatment of chronic diseases through the discovery of high-quality drug candidates and disruptive technology innovations. We operate as a Transformational Research Unit (TRU), meaning we are a relatively small team of elite interdisciplinary researchers working in unison yet with autonomy relative to the global R&D organization—essentially a biotech-like ecosystem within the Novo Nordisk biosphere. We have multiple strategic collaborations with internationally acclaimed academic centers of excellence and emerging biotech’s, which we view as an integral part of our discovery research process and essential for our fundamental scientific endeavors. Collectively, this allows us to focus our efforts on data generation and translation of research hypotheses to foster quick data-driven, non-stochastic decisions. 

We are keenly focused on grassroot discovery projects pertaining to cardio-metabolic diseases and rare endocrine disorders, and we are responsible for driving projects from ideation to clinical development. In addition to drug discovery research, we also explore novel chemical biology technologies to optimize the therapeutic applications of peptides/proteins as well as biotechnologies that catalyze the pursuits of therapeutic modalities new to Novo Nordisk.  Are you ready to make a difference?

 

The Position

The Senior Scientist will provide scientific leadership in the identification, evaluation, and validation of new drug targets, advancing novel therapies from preclinical discovery to the clinic, and developing technologies and methodologies to accelerate drug research. This will be achieved by coordinating multiple research activities involving cross-functional project teams to ensure achievement of key deliverables. The position will represent the organization to the external scientific community through publication and presentation of research and through participation in external collaborations.

 

Relationships

Reports to of the Site Head of Novo Nordisk Research Center Indianapolis & Senior Director of the Transformational Research Unit-Chemical Biology.
 
Internal relationships include project teams and research colleagues in Seattle, Indianapolis, Denmark, and around the globe. Communicates data externally when required. Will build strong relations with key stakeholders in global departments of Translational Science and Medicine, Translational Technology, In Vivo Pharmacology, and project management. May manage external relationships with academic collaborators, biotech partners, and contractual research organizations.

 

Essential Functions

  • Advances research projects across therapy areas by demonstrating expertise, creativity, and scientific leadership in biomarker discovery and validation, translational pharmacology and toxicology, and new target exploration leveraging a broad knowledge of metabolic and endocrine diseases combined with advanced translational genomic and proteomic datasets.
  • Spearhead local translational methodology by developing, enacting, and performing strategies to advance new target discovery efforts through non-clinical development. This includes discovery of new drug targets through human-centric datasets, mapping the path from rodent in vivo pharmacology/safety to higher mammalian species (dogs, pigs, monkeys, etc.) and advising/defining/validating integrated biomarker-bioanalytical strategies to assess target engagement, efficacy, and safety.
  • Analyzes complex data with high degree of sophistication, connecting disparate datasets to reach conclusions and set direction on experiments. Contributes strong scientific acumen to enable projects and advance the research agenda.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates across global sites and guides project strategy by providing leadership of cross-functional project teams. Represents the organization through external communication of impactful scientific research in the form of presentation at external conferences and publication in scientific journals and patents. May manage external collaborations.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of theoretical knowledge and a connection to the external scientific community through continuous evaluation of relevant literature. Expands the capabilities of translational pharmacology through the generation of new ideas, evaluation of new translational processes, technologies, and methodologies, and implementation of novel workflows that add value.
  • Leads cross-functional experimental teams to achieve project goals, mentor junior staff, and provide training.
  • Influences the research pipeline by proposing new projects that support the strategic agenda.

 

Physical Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor 's degree with with 18+ years’ relevant experience required. Degree in pharmacology, molecular biochemistry, bioinformatics or medicine preferred.
    • OR Doctoral degree within with 6+ years’ post-doctoral and/or industry relevant experience or Master’s degree with 12+ years’ relevant experience a can also be considered.
  • Relevant required experience includes some combination of: 
    • Strong experience with discovery, identification, and validation of biomarkers for pharmacodynamic efficacy, safety, target engagement and patient segmentation, including analytical and pre-clinical to clinical validation of biomarker assays.
    • Strong experience interpreting preclinical studies in rodents to design and implement non-clinical studies in higher mammalian species to assess proof of concepts for mechanism, efficacy, safety, and variability
    • Strong experience in data mining and leveraging human genetic databases and human cohort data to discover new drug targets or generate evidence that defines translational relevance to biological targets 
    • Strong experience with data management and analysis of complex genomic and proteomic data sets 
    • Strong experience with proposing and advancing research project proposals
    • Strong interpersonal skills to be effective in multiple high-functioning teams.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.

The base compensation range for this position is $108,000 to $200,000. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors.  In addition, this position is part of the Annual Performance Incentive Plan. The role may also be eligible for a long-term incentive bonus depending on level and other Company factors.
