Job Description

As a global leader in antiviral therapy, Gilead is committed to the prevention, treatment and cure of many viral infections of global significance. To continue expanding our antiviral research, we are seeking an experienced, highly motivated and creative scientist with expertise in virology and drug discovery to take a leading role in efforts to identify and develop novel agents for the treatment and prevention of major respiratory viral infections. In addition, the candidate will have unique opportunity to significantly contribute to our collaborative efforts in the discovery and development of new medical countermeasures for emerging and neglected viral pathogens representing threat to global public health such as Ebola, MERS or Nipah viruses.

Position Responsibilities and Functions

  • Identify and execute innovative approaches for antiviral treatment and prevention.
  • Lead assessment of novel targets and antiviral agents.
  • Design and execute critical studies to support the selection of targets or development candidate molecules.
  • Use advanced molecular and diagnostic methods to understand pathology and epidemiology of relevant viral pathogens and support translational studies.
  • Supervise and mentor a group of highly productive scientists.
  • Build and maintain close relationships with Gilead R&D departments and other relevant functional areas.
  • Lead inter-departmental meetings and discussions, communicate vision, strategy and research results.
  • Identify and support external collaborations, partnerships and business development opportunities.
  • Support regulatory filings.
  • Maintain deep understanding and knowledge of research and development in the area of respiratory and emerging viruses.
  • Represent Gilead externally at scientific meetings, advisory boards, and through high impact presentations, publications, and other scientific communications.



Expertise and Skills

  • PhD or equivalent graduate degree in a relevant life science discipline (i.e. virology, infectious diseases, immunology, cellular or molecular biology).
  • Minimum of 7 years post-doctoral research experience with solid experience in virology.
  • Proven scientific achievements in industrial or academic settings.
  • Ability to conduct productive and innovative research based on clear understanding of drug discovery and development principles.
  • Management skills including effective mentorship and career development support.
  • Mature organizational skills combined with effective leadership in executing complex drug discovery studies towards defined milestones.
  • Strong commitment to cross-functional team work in a fast pace R&D organization.
  • Advanced communication skills with ability to eloquently present complex strategies and results.
