Description and Functions
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking to hire a Biologist Technician-Fisheries. This seasonal position will assist fisheries management crews with all aspects of aquatic resource management activities; however, this position will spend approximately half of their time working in a laboratory/office environment. This position will be based out of Casper, Wyoming. This is a contract position funded from March 20 to September 18, 2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.

  • The first three months of this position will focus on laboratory work, including mounting, sectioning, and aging otoliths, counting fish eggs, and peeling fish eye lenses. There will also be extended periods of data entry and equipment repair.
  • The last three months of this position will be variable and may include gillnetting and hydroacoustic surveys on reservoirs and lakes, electrofishing rivers and small streams, amphibian and reptile surveys, assisting on chemical restoration projects, data entry, and equipment maintenance.
  • Biological technicians will also assist with watercraft inspection and decontamination in cooperation with the state's aquatic invasive species program and assist with the aquatic habitat program.
  • Candidates need to be willing to learn and successfully perform routine fisheries management tasks.



Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to those pursuing a career or degree in fisheries.
Preference may include those with a high school degree plus experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or college course work towards a degree in fishery or wildlife management, ichthyology, hydrology, watershed science, or other closely related fields.
Preference may be given to those with experience with mounting, sectioning, and aging otoliths.
Preference may be given to those with experience operating motorized watercraft and/or gillnetting.

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position must be able to work well independently with minimal supervision and work well with others on a small crew.
  • This is a field position that requires physical labor, such as hiking, wading in streams and rivers, and carrying backpacks.
  • During the field portion of this contract, this position will travel statewide, typically Monday through Friday, staying in hotels or camping. All travel costs will be covered by the Department. Fieldwork can occur in inclement weather.
