Biomedical AI/ML Engineer

Position Overview and Responsibilities
The Center for Biomedical Data Sciences is seeking a Biomedical AI/ML Engineer to support OMRF AI initiatives. This role will work collaboratively with the Associate Director for AI and Research Computing Initiatives and Information Technology to develop, manage, and facilitate effective adoption of internal AI/ML solutions. This position is ideal for an individual passionate about applications of AI/ML in biomedical research and helping people from a wide variety of backgrounds learn how to use these rapidly evolving technologies.

Some key responsibilities include:
• Developing and maintaining production-level software tools for processing and analyzing complex biomedical data.
• Implementing and deploying Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines for querying vector databases, relational databases, and graph databases, as well as agentic tool execution.
• Integrating technologies, such as RAG or tool execution, into chat interfaces.
• Collaborate with scientific and IT personnel to identify AI/ML use cases which are both valuable and scalable.
• Work both independently and as part of the broader CBDS/IT team, contributing to OMRF AI initiatives and training personnel on using AI effectively.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of computer programming (e.g., R and Python)
• Demonstrated expertise in data analysis, project management, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.
• Strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a research setting.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science, Mathematics, Biostatistics, or a related field with at least two (2) years of relevant experience.
• Expertise in developing AI/ML solutions in Python and R.
• Expertise in using version control with Git/GitHub.
• Expertise in DevOps/MLOps/AIOps and developing reproducible code.
• Experience with containerization (e.g., using Docker or Podman) and container management (e.g., Kubernetes).
• Experience with front-end development (e.g., HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
• Experience in data analysis in biological or medical research environments.
• Demonstrated experience communicating technical information through research presentations or teaching.

Work Hours
Typically, Monday through Friday, from 8:30AM to 5:00PM.
