The department of Community, Environment, & Policy invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Biostatistician III. This mentored role will include study planning, statistical analysis, manuscript writing, and grant preparation for the Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study, with mentor-ship by study Principal Investigators.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Write SAPs for planned analyses.
  • Lead statistical analyses for FFCCS manuscripts and assist in writing the statistical methods for the manuscripts with collaborators across FFCCS.
  • Serve as first author on several manuscripts, including methodological manuscripts.
  • Work with mentors in advancing AI, statistical and epidemiological methods for complex exposures and high dimensional biological data.
  • Share/present results with mentors, at internal meetings, with fire service partners, and at conferences.
  • Work with mentors to prepare an application for a pathway to independence award (i.e., K99/R00).
  • Assist with preparing other grant applications related to FFCCS.
  • Write SAPs and conduct power calculations for grant applications.
  • Write, run, and maintain R scripts to clean, organize, and store FFCCS data following data safety requirements.
  • Identify and implement improvements to the general data pipeline.
  • Work with the REDCap data manager to store and organize data.
  • Work with the lab team to maintain a QC/QA pipeline between specimen data and Box/REDCap.
  • Mentor students who are part of the data team. Mentoring can include teaching: statistical methods, coding in R, communicating results, data safety practices, and manuscript preparation.
  • Lead weekly data team meetings.
  • Serve as a point of contact for the U of A data team, and delegate tasks assigned to the data team.
  • Assist in training new members of the data team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.



Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD-level knowledge of biostatistics, epidemiology, data management best practices, and unique requirements of working in community engaged studies with firefighters.
