Chemist

Position Summary:

Conducts both routine and complex assignments under minimal supervision. Responsible for keeping instruments in service as well as collaborating with vendors when necessary. Maintains and continuously improves SQC program including precision and accuracy charting. May lead the work of others on a regular basis.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to the following):

* Performs a wide variety of analytical tests on petroleum products, refinery related chemicals, and wastewater.

* Tracks expiration dates on standards, reagents, and consumables.

* Develops, refines, and validates GC and other analytical methods to improve accuracy, precision, and turnaround time.

* Assists refinery operations and technical services personnel with troubleshooting activities.

* Maintains, updates, and authors Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.

* Calibrates, qualifies, verifies, troubleshoots, and maintains Lab instrumentation.

* Provides assistance and training to Laboratory Technicians.

* Inventories and orders supplies and consumables.

* Performs laboratory safety inspections.

* Reviews and reconciles sample backlogs in LIMS.

* Reviews previous day/night shift hand-off notes and ensures continuity of testing.

* Maintains a safe laboratory environment through strict adherence to PPE, hazard communication, and SDS documentation.

* Checks and approves logs for completeness and compliance.

* Facilitates communication between analytical, physical properties, management, and operations teams for project alignment and sample prioritization.

* Leads and supports analytical improvement projects under the Lab Excellence initiative.

* Participates in and lead refresher training.

Job Qualifications (refers to job, not incumbent):

Education:

Minimum: Bachelor s degree in chemistry or related science field.

Preferred: Master s degree in chemistry or related science field.

Experience:

Minimum: 2-5 years experience working in a similar capacity at a laboratory testing facility.

Other:

* Applies critical thinking skills to interpret deviations from statistical trends and form logical conclusions to formulate resolutions.

* Must be able to work within a team, take direction from Laboratory Manager, adhere to required work schedules, focus attention on details, follow standard operating procedures, and take on additional job responsibilities as assigned.

* Ability to communicate effectively with the Laboratory Team and refinery staff

* Good interpersonal and teamwork skills.

* Demonstrate an ability to understand and utilize various software programs.

* Possess Analytical and problem-solving skills.

* Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office platform.

Working Conditions (relates to physical environment):

Typically, works in a laboratory environment but also might be required to obtain samples from the Tank Farm or Refinery. Must have the ability to sit or stand at laboratory benches and computer stations for extended periods of time and tolerate the extended use of standard laboratory equipment.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to work safely in a hazardous environment with potential exposure to chemicals and solvents. Requires extensive safety training and personal protection equipment, manual dexterity necessary to correctly operate laboratory equipment, and visual acuity necessary to inspect laboratory equipment for visible leaks. Must be able to go into the Refinery and Tank Farm to collect samples or maintain equipment.
