By joining the DEP/DEPS as a Chemist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to extract andprepare samples such as Pesticides, PCBs, Semi-Volatiles, Diesel Range Organics, Herbicides, and others foranalysis by GC, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS and LC/MS/MS.
Holders of the Chemist I position will complete tasks such as:
- Preparation/extraction of environmental samples according to established US EPA Drinking Water, Waste Waterand SW (Solid Waste)-846 Hazardous Waste Methods for organic contaminants to be analyzed by GC (GasChromatography), GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry), GC/MS/MS (Gas Chromatography with tandem MassSpectrometers) and LC/MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography with tandem Mass Spectrometers).
- Preparation of solutions and standards as required by US EPA for the extraction of organic compounds indrinking water, wastewater, ground water, fish tissue and soil.
- Maintains and troubleshoots equipment used for the preparation and extraction of samples for organiccompounds.
- Begins training on analytical organic methods.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or in a natural, physical, forensic science or a related science field.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances, or compounds when performing chemical analysis, which may require utilization of safety measures. Field work may be required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
