The Energy and Environment Cabinet, Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Environmental ProgramSupport (DEPS), Inorganic Branch, Standard Testing Section is a chemical laboratory setting that will provide youwith the opportunity to practice your skills and be a part of a monitoring and testing team for most of thewaters of the commonwealth. The recreational lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks all over the commonwealtheventually get testing by the DEPS laboratory for nutrients, metals, volatile compounds, pesticides, andharmful algal blooms. If you are interested in being part of a first responder team for environmentalemergency spills, created both by accident and due to citizen negligence, as well as running samples that can helpidentify both known and unknown contaminants, to enforce environmental laws, protecting both human andwildlife habitats and bring responsible parties to justice, then this is the job for you.

This Chemist I position is an entry level position that will focus primarily on the preparation and analysisof inorganic compounds in water and soil samples. You will be working in a state of the art laboratory in theCentralized Laboratory Facility located at 100 Sower Boulevard in Frankfort, KY. This position is eligible forpromotion and will be granted upon completion of service time and annual performance goals.

By joining the DEPS, Inorganic Branch, Standard Testing Section as a Chemist I in Franklin County, you will havethe opportunity to work in helping DEPS meet programmatic, monitoring, and regulatory testing needs.

Holders of the Chemist I position will complete tasks such as:

  • Performs routine preparation and analysis of various types of water, waste, soil, and tissue samples usingseveral different types of instrumentation. Once trained, the chemist will serve as the primary analyst forseveral analytical methods.
  • Converts raw data to final results using data reduction programs and reviews raw data for errors.
  • Performs routine maintenance on instruments.

Additional position information: travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.

EDUCATION:Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, or in a natural, physical, forensic science or a related science field.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous materials, substances, or compounds when performing chemical analysis, which may require utilization of safety measures. Field work may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
