POSITION OVERVIEW

Performs highly technical chemical analysis according to clearly prescribed procedures and laboratory techniques. Performs bacteriological analyses on water, wastewater, industrial waste, and other environmental samples. Conducts routine analyses and non-routine analyses of sewage waste and industrial waste samples. Prepares standard solutions and reagents for use in chemical and biological testing. Reviews and interprets test results; prepares and distributes required reports. Maintains inventory; orders laboratory chemicals, equipment and supplies. Handles instruments, troubleshooting and maintenance; makes minor repairs. Performs sensitive or special technical assignments as required. Designs and implements quality assurance products and follow NELAC protocols for testing and record keeping. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier II Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of laboratory work experience is required.
SUBSTITUTION:
A Master's in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution may be substituted for the required experience.
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in Environmental Laboratory.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified 15 candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
