Chemist III - Mass Spectroscopist
Position Summary
As a Chemist III - Mass Spectroscopist, you will support the development, optimization, and application of LC-MS/MS analytical methods for water quality testing, with a focus on PFAS and emerging contaminants in environmental matrices. This role combines advanced mass spectrometry method development with broader Chemist III responsibilities including independent analytical chemistry research, cross-functional collaboration, commercialization support, and technical leadership.
The position requires hands-on expertise with SCIEX triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS systems and the ability to design and execute complex analytical chemistry experiments related to water quality technologies, reagents, sensors, and instrumentation. The role will also support evaluation of emerging technologies, contribute to intellectual property development, and help identify new applications and growth opportunities within the water analytics portfolio.
Research & Analytical Leadership
• Design and execute analytical chemistry experiments related to water quality technologies, reagents, sensors, and instrumentation.
• Lead development and optimization of analytical methods for PFAS, nutrients, metals, TOC, disinfectants, organics, and emerging contaminants.
• Independently manage research activities, analyze experimental data, and guide technical decisions using sound scientific and statistical principles.
• Investigate complex analytical challenges and develop practical solutions for environmental and product-related applications.
LC-MS/MS Method Development
• Develop, optimize, and validate targeted LC-MS/MS methods for trace-level detection of PFAS and emerging contaminants.
• Design and refine MRM transitions, including compound tuning and collision energy optimization.
• Optimize ionization and source conditions to improve sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility.
• Develop methods aligned with EPA 537.1, 533, and 1633.
• Quantify PFAS compounds across a range of chain lengths and chemistries.
• Implement best practices for contamination control and background management.
Platform-Specific Execution (SCIEX Emphasis)
• Execute method development and routine analysis on SCIEX triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS systems (4500, 5500, 6500, and 7500 series).
• Utilize SCIEX Analyst® and MultiQuant™ software for method development, batch processing, and quantitative analysis.
• Troubleshoot issues including sensitivity loss, contamination, carryover, and system performance.
Cross-Functional Innovation & Commercialization
• Collaborate with engineering, product management, manufacturing, regulatory, and commercial teams to transition technologies from concept through commercialization.
• Evaluate external technologies, scientific literature, patents, and partnership opportunities to support innovation and portfolio growth.
• Support customer VOC activities, field evaluations, and identification of new application opportunities in water analytics.
Technical Documentation & Intellectual Property
• Maintain laboratory documentation and generate technical reports, validation summaries, scientific presentations, and application notes.
• Contribute to invention disclosures, patent activities, and technical communications for internal and external stakeholders.
Scientific Leadership
• Provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams and mentor junior scientists and technicians.
• Collaborate with external partners, universities, startups, and contract laboratories on research and technology evaluation activities.
Education and Background
Bachelor's degree with 3+ years OR Master's degree with 1+ year of experience in Analytical Chemistry or related field.
Required Experience
• Hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS (triple quadrupole) for quantitative analysis.
• Direct experience working with SCIEX triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS systems.
• Proven expertise in MRM method development and optimization.
