Chief Medical Physicist

Overview

As the Chief Medical Physicist you'll be responsible for planning, coordinating, directing and supervising the activities and uses of personnel, equipment and supplies to meet the Medical Physics needs of Springfield Memorial Medical Hospital and Memorial Health System Affiliates, as assigned. Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD degree in Medical Physics or Physics.


Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics certification in Diagnostic Radiological Physics.
  • Registration as an approved diagnostic imaging specialist by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.


Experience:

  • 5 years experience in Medical Physics required.
  • Experience in radiation-producing equipment installation, acceptance, calibration.



Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Membership and participation in professional development activities through the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication ability required.
  • Excellent human relations skills required.



Responsibilities

  1. To ensure that doses in Medical Imaging are accurate, precise, and consistent with national standards.
  2. To manage the Quality Assurance program in Medical Imaging by assisting the department in the design, documentation, implementation and evaluation of procedures that ensure proper equipment performance consistent with accurate and precise doses.
  3. To provide medical physics consultation for the clinical support of Radiologists, as required.
  4. To ensure the safe and efficacious use of radiation-producing devices and radioactive material, the Senior Medical Physicist will assist all appropriate departments in the design, documentation, implementation and evaluation of proper departmental radiation safety procedures.
  5. To maintain in good standing all federal, state and local licenses and accreditations applicable to radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices and help ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  6. Provide technical medical physics support in the design, development and implementation of new techniques or products that enhance the quality of patient care.
  7. Meet the regulatory and patient safety responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Officer as assigned.
  8. Design, development and implementation of departmental quality control procedures based on national protocols or national standards as necessary.
  9. Provides backup to other Medical Physics staff within the scope of credentials as needed.
  10. Maintains compliance with standards of care and regulatory requirements for accreditations maintained by Medical Imaging.
  11. Responsible for the development of programs that promote the recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of staff members.
  12. Develop and implement mechanisms designed to enable and encourage staff members to pursue relevant educational developmental goals.
  13. Supports staff and encourages them to act with appropriate authority over and responsibility for the work processes in which they are involved.
  14. Stimulates staff to continuously improve their performance, thereby improving department and organization performance.
  15. Assumes responsibility for the communication and conformance of Memorial Health System's Corporate Compliance and Ethics Program within assigned areas.
  16. Performs other related work as required or requested.
