What You Will Do:

  • Coordinates and provides exercise related consulting and conducts assessments and individualized training to guide and strengthen the lifestyles of those with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and disorders.
  • Demonstrates skill and competency related to blood pressure monitoring, EKG monitoring and assessment, oxygen saturation monitoring of patients for appropriate response to exercise.
  • Plans, implements, and supervises exercise prescription and progression for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease.
  • Assesses patients for appropriateness for exercise, potential problems or limitations that impact exercise based on their individual needs and goals.
  • Determines exercise prescription based on ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) guidelines for exercise prescription specific to the cardiopulmonary population.
  • Measures physiological and subjective responses to exercise at appropriate intervals during test. Records, organizes, and performs necessary calculations of test data for interpretation.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to team members specific to the skills and knowledge of exercise physiology.
  • Communicates observations, changes in patient's progress, identified problems/concerns to physicians and healthcare team members within appropriate time frame as determined by situation.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, families, physicians, and team members.
  • Accurately assesses patient before, during and after exercise.
  • Documents appropriate patient information regarding each exercise session.
  • Provides quality and effective patient education and documentation.
  • Develops and implements patient/family teaching plan based on identified health education needs.
  • Evaluates and documents effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
  • Recognizes and identifies critical changes in patient's status which requires immediate action.
  • Assures continuity of care through follow-up with patient and appropriate healthcare providers
  • Assesses patient's educational, rehabilitative, and risk factor modification needs to plan and provide care based on assessed needs and documents.
  • Monitors the patient's clinical course utilizing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Interprets EKG and bases care and/or treatment on EKG findings.
  • Monitors patient's responses of heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, perceived exertion, pulse oximetry, and other signs and symptoms to exercise intensity and duration and makes adjustments to exercise.
  • Provides and performs patient education and orientation to the outpatient program and ensures understanding.
  • Accurately enters patient charges for services into Meditech.
  • Promotes patient safety through:
    • Patient instruction on proper use of exercise equipment.
    • Correction of patient behaviors or positioning during exercise that increase risk of injury.
    • Ensure 100% patient compliance with use of equipment safety mechanisms.


What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. Exercise specialist certification by ACSM is preferred.
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Minimum one year of clinical experience in a cardiopulmonary rehab setting preferred.
  • Ability to utilize specialized equipment and computer-based equipment and programs.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model displaying enthusiasm, positive interpersonal interactions, and health promotion.
