Environmental Engineer
Job Overview:
The Fresh Kills Landfill consists of four landfill sections and a Landfill Gas (LFG) Production Facility. The facility collects and controls LFG through a complex network of wells, sumps, blowers, flares, and conveyance systems. APTIM provides continuous operations, maintenance, and facility management services for this system.
APTIM, as the prime contractor for DSNY, is responsible for the continuous operation, maintenance, and management of the landfill gas collection system.
The Environmental Engineer / Operations Support Specialist will play a key role in planning, coordination, oversight, and quality assurance of wellfield operations and contracting activities. This position bridges the gap between field operations and project engineering, ensuring compliance, operational efficiency, and proper execution of scope.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
1. Oversight & Technical Support
- Provide technical review and oversight of daily wellfield technician activities, including LFG well balancing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Evaluate data and field reports to identify trends, performance issues, or areas needing adjustment.
- Support corrective actions to optimize system performance and compliance.
2. Planning & Coordination
- Assist the Project Manager in planning routine and special maintenance activities for the wellfield system.
- Develop detailed scopes of work for external contractors performing construction, maintenance, or system upgrade tasks.
- Coordinate and support scheduling of subcontractor work to align with operational priorities and regulatory timelines.
3. Engineering & Documentation
- Review and interpret technical drawings, as-built plans, and operational data.
- Provide input into system modifications, repairs, and optimization strategies.
- Prepare and review field documentation, inspection reports, and technical correspondence.
4. Regulatory & Safety Compliance
- Ensure field operations conform to applicable environmental, safety, and technical standards.
- Support compliance reporting through review of sampling data and technician logs.
- Assist with implementation of best management practices and permit requirements.
5. Site & Team Support
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor to wellfield technicians.
- Assist with access planning, safety assessments, and coordination for multi-party field activities.
- Participate in site inspections, troubleshooting, and after-hours support as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in environmental field operations, landfill gas systems, or infrastructure O&M.
- Strong understanding of LFG collection systems, wellfield balancing, and environmental monitoring.
- Proficiency in preparing scopes of work, technical specifications, and contractor coordination.
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varied conditions and terrain.
Preferred Qualifications:
- SWANA LFG Basics or equivalent technical training.
- 40-hour OSHA Health & Safety (HAZWOPER) certification and annual refresher.
- Prior experience supervising or supporting landfill gas technicians.
- Experience with environmental reporting, permitting, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with gas extraction infrastructure.
Working Conditions:
- Outdoor work on landfill cover systems (final and interim).
- Physical activity including walking over uneven ground and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Some after-hours and emergency response support as required.

As of the date of this posting, a good faith estimate of the current pay range for this position is $95,000 per year. Compensation depends on several factors including: experience, education, key skills, geographic location of the position, client requirements, external market competitiveness, and internal equity among other employees within APTIM.
