About the Agency: The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District provides water to the City of Jackson for treatment and distribution, serves over 5,800 water customers in four systems, and provides recreational opportunities for over 2,250,000 annual visitors. The Ross Barnett Reservoir is a 33,000-acre impoundment at the heart of the District on the Pearl River just north of Jackson. Ownership and operation of the reservoir, its shoreline, and the 17,000 acres of surrounding property are vested in the District. The District member counties include Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Scott, and Leake counties. The District is responsible for the maintenance of the reservoir dam, spillway, approximately 50 public areas and entrances, 5 campgrounds, and 4 water/sewer systems. The spillway control tower, Reservoir Patrol, and the 5 campgrounds are staffed 24 hours a day. About the Position: The Engineer I position is a second-level full-time position in the District's Engineering Department. The Engineer I will work from the District's main office located at 6018 Lakeshore Park in Rankin County. The Engineer I will be assigned various projects and duties as directed by the Chief Engineer. Duties may include inspection of facilities and infrastructure, observation of construction or repair activities, review of reports, plans and documents, preparation of reports, preparation of plans and specifications forprojects, solicitation of bids or quotes from contractors or vendors, and collection and analysis of data. The Engineer I may be required to collect samples of water, soil, or other materials. The Engineer I will attend meetings on various topics and will be required to make presentations to other staff members, decision-making committees, boards, and the public. The Engineer I will be assigned projects for which he/she will be responsible.
What you'll need to be Successful: A successful applicant must possess a working knowledge of basic engineering principles such as physics, statics, and hydrodynamics. Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of basic engineering calculations such as determining areas and volumes. Must possess an understanding of water resources management and water quality management. Applicants must be able to read and understand construction drawings and specifications, have an understanding of construction contracting, and be able to read and understand a simple contract. Applicants should understand the basic principles of water supply and wastewater collection, transport, and treatment. Applicants should understand the properties and uses of common construction materials such as soils, concrete, asphalt, wood, PVC, and steel. Competent in basic computer skills, including creation, manipulation, and storage of documents, spreadsheets, databases, and other types of electronic files. Applicants should be proficient in the use of the internet and on-line search applications. Applicants must demonstrate good oral and written communication skills. A sound work ethic is essential. Applicants must be willing to learn and to work outside around water and wildlife for moderate periods, willing to travel by boat and work over water for short periods. Applicants must be able to work with staff members of various fields and levels of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree, a valid certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer from the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and 0-3 years of engineering experience. - Agency Qualifications:Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate passenger vehicles and light trucks.
