By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) as an Environmental Engineer Supervisor for the Eastern RegionBranch Design Section in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to:
- Lead engineering initiatives to restore historic abandoned mine lands, mitigate dangerous hazards likehighwalls and open portals, and protect Kentucky's natural resources.
- Direct design and technical operations: Oversee project design and realty staff, providing quality controlon construction drawings and documents.
- Use high-precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), aerial drone and terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Geographic Information System (GIS) workflows to conduct and oversee siteassessments, earthwork calculations, and 3D terrain modeling.
- Coordinate workflows across the team to ensure design packages, cost estimates, and permit requirementsstay aligned with agency objectives.
- Coordinate property acquisition and reality: Streamline right-of-entry, easements, and land clearances byclosely partnering with the team's realty specialist ahead of construction bidding.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and agencies: Work alongside federal partners like Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), locallandowners, and other groups to proactively resolve property concerns and community needs.
Holders of the Environmental Engineer Supervisor position will complete tasks such as:
- Visit sites for potential design to assess the nature and severity of the eligible issues for reclamation.
- Supervise design of projects using engineering software, including AutoCAD, Global Mapper, and other GIS andEngineering software.
- Supervise and assist with preparation of documentation for the bid package needed for construction.
- Supervise and conduct surveying activities as needed using advanced survey equipment and collaborate with theUnmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) section as needed collecting data to support design and construction activities.
- Meet with landowners and contractors over the course of the design and construction process.
- Assist the Branch Manager as needed with construction management and bid process.
- Visit active projects and assist in making field engineering decisions.
- Review and approve leave requests and timesheets, conduct employee performance evaluations. Train new employeesin the implementation of engineering design and construction.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
- Licensed as a professional engineer (PE) by the Kentucky Board of Engineers.
- Experience with AutoCAD and Carlson Computer-Aided Desig (CAD) software packages.
- Experience using survey equipment and data, including data collected by UAV.
- Engineering experience in environmental, mining, or civil fields.
- Previous management or supervisory experience directing technical staff and project workflows.
- Desire to learn and use new and advanced technology and software to improve the efficiency and quality ofwork done to further the mission of AML and the Energy and Environment Cabinet.
This position involves regular field work and travel throughout the state in support of the AML mission. Fieldactivities include the investigation of sites for remediation, construction surveying, site visits withcontractors and various state and federal agencies, and training activities.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:Must have two years of engineering experience in addition to that required for licensure as a professional engineer.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience. Graduate work in engineering beyond a master's degree will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in the office and in the field. Will be exposed to risks inherent to construction sites.
