Environmental Engineering Faculty Position
Description
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a faculty position in environmental engineering beginning Fall 2027. The successful candidate is expected to have an established track record in research and education and will be hired at the associate or full professor level (depending on the record, experience, and qualifications).
The Department seeks candidates with expertise in nuclear environmental engineering, broadly defined to encompass environmental challenges associated with current and emerging nuclear technologies. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, environmental impacts, sustainability, safety and management across the nuclear energy life cycle, advanced nuclear energy systems and fuel cycles, with applications to power (for civilian and/or military use), radioactive waste treatment, storage, transport and disposal, facility and site decontamination, decommissioning and remediation, environmental monitoring and characterization, risk assessment, and safeguards and security. Research employing experimental, computational, theoretical, or data-driven approaches is of interest.
This position is part of the School of Engineering's commitment to establishing an interdisciplinary Defense Technology Cluster aimed at addressing related grand societal and scientific challenges. This hiring focus reflects our dedication to strengthening collaboration across disciplines within the School of Engineering and the University.
The successful candidate is expected to leverage and be closely affiliated with on-going research initiative and centers at Vanderbilt University such as the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP; nuclear energy systems and waste management, nuclear missions, nuclear fuel cycles and associated waste management); Vanderbilt Center for Sustainability, Energy and Climate (energy integration, resource sustainability, climate adaptation and mitigation, and systems risk, reliability and resilience); and Institute for National Security (interdisciplinary security research, experiential education, defense innovation, and cross-sector collaboration). The successful candidates will be expected to adopt Vanderbilt's "radical collaboration" concept and leverage resources and expertise that exist within the School of Engineering, as well as the University as a whole.
Qualifications
The new faculty member will be expected to (i) establish a nationally recognized research program with extramural funds, (ii) teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and (iii) contribute to synergistic efforts within the department, school, and university. A PhD in an applicable discipline (e.g., environmental, nuclear or chemical engineering) must be in hand at the time of the appointment.
Application Instructions
