Position Summary

The School of Engineering and Technology at Central Michigan University invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position to support the environmental engineering program. The start date for this position is August 2026. We seek a colleague with expertise in any aspect of environmental engineering, but preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds in one of the following areas:

  • Environmental remediation
  • Solid and hazardous waste engineering
  • Molecular tools for environmental engineering
  • Air pollution engineering


The selected candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories, develop an externally funded research program, advise students in research and senior design, and contribute service to benefit the program, school, college, university, profession, and surrounding community. The selected candidate will teach required and elective courses in the environmental engineering program but may also teach general engineering and engineering technology courses (depending on specific expertise) that support all programs within the school. We also expect the candidate to develop new courses based on their area of interest.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Ecological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related engineering field. Exceptional ABD candidates will be considered if their degree is completed by the start of the appointment.
  • Potential for outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and the ability to teach core and elective courses offered within the school.
  • Demonstrated record of research publications and potential to develop a rigorous scholarship program that involves students.
  • Strong commitment to and potential for research that attracts external funding and leads to publications in competitive peer-reviewed journals.
  • Commitment to student success and fostering a supportive environment for every member of our university community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated record of effective teaching as the lead instructor.
  • Demonstrated record of securing external funding.
  • Postdoctoral experience (academic or industry).
  • Experience integrating high impact teaching practices (e.g., active learning, project-based learning) into the classroom.
  • Professional engineering licensure, or possibility of obtaining licensure in the near future.
  • Relevant industrial or government experience.

About the Department

The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) is housed in the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). SET has four undergraduate Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Environmental Engineering), three undergraduate Engineering Technology (Industrial, Mechanical, and Product Design Engineering Technology) and a graduate (MS in Engineering) program. All undergraduate programs are accredited by ABET. SET presently has 24 full-time faculty members. Courses are taught in an attractive 70,000 square foot engineering & technology building which houses more than twenty laboratories and support spaces.
