THE POSITION
Join the Department of Environmental Protection as an Environmental Toxicologist and help protect the health of Pennsylvania communities. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position plays a key role in understanding environmental hazards and communicating their impacts on public health. The work supports strong decision making that protects people, communities, and natural resources. As an Environmental Toxicologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Exposure Analysis: Evaluate environmental and human health risks using scientific studies and toxicity data
  • Health Guidance: Develop advisories and educational materials that explain toxicology and exposure concerns
  • Emergency Support: Assist with planning and response activities during toxic environmental incidents
  • Scientific Review: Analyze research findings and determine their reliability and relevance to public health
  • Agency Collaboration: Work with state and federal partners to identify hazards and support environmental programs
  • Public Communication: Provide clear explanations of toxicological issues to officials, communities, and stakeholders

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime required to support Emergency Response during hazardous materials incidents and may need to work after hours and on weekends.
  • Travel required to attend meetings and conferences around the Commonwealth and EPA Region 3.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of post-doctoral experience in the field of toxicology or pharmacology, which includes two years of experience in conducting risk assessments or setting toxicity thresholds; and a doctoral degree in toxicology or a closely related field.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires board certification in general toxicology by the American Board of Toxicology or an equivalent certifying body within 12-24 months of employment.


Additional Requirements:
