Epidemiologist I/II - HEALTH

Pay: Level 1 - $53,370.00 annually; Level 2 - $58,820.00 annually. Level determined based on qualifications.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00AM - 5:00PM, may work more than 40 hours per week, including evenings & week

Epidemiologists I and II support the Sedgwick County Health Department to control the spread of disease and protect the public from health threats. These positions conduct disease investigations and plan and implement studies to prevent or control diseases, injuries, and conditions. These positions are part of a 24/7 on-call rotation. Employees are exposed to hostile or emotionally charged individuals and sensitive and potentially disturbing content related to serious health concerns. Employees may deploy to the field as responders or in a leadership position during public health emergencies. Monitor, analyze, and report on disease data to improve the health of the community. Conduct disease investigations for more than 50 notifiable diseases and conditions per established state and local guidelines. Educate and collaborate with health partners in controlling the spread of disease.

An EPIDEMIOLOGIST I will assist with investigations and has the following qualifications.

  • Perform descriptive analysis of disease investigation and surveillance data, such as elevated blood lead.
  • Assist with outbreak investigations, including driving for on-site review.



Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in public health or similar that includes 9 credit hours in epidemiological methods and 12 credit hours in biostatistics, data analytics, and/or statistical software applications. One year of experience in epidemiology or any equivalent combination of experience and trainings. Six months school or work experience in data management and/or data analysis. Two years of experience working with Microsoft Office Suite or similar systems. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Three credit hours coursework or 6 months of work experience related to environmental health and/or elevated blood lead. Two years of work experience in a public health department or healthcare setting. One year of experience with data management and/or data analysis; experience with SAS, SPSS or other database software.

An EPIDEMIOLOGIST II will lead investigations and has the following qualifications.

  • Utilize advanced statistical techniques to manage, analyze, and summarize disease investigation and surveillance data
  • Lead outbreak investigations, including driving for on-site review



Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in public health or similar that includes 9 credit hours in epidemiological methods and 12 credit hours in biostatistics, data analytics, and/or statistical software applications. Two years of experience as an epidemiologist or similar position in a public health department or healthcare setting, including one year of experience with reportable disease investigations. One year school or work experience with data management and/or data analysis. Two years of experience working with Microsoft Office Suite or similar systems. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver's license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment.
