Description

The epidemiologist is responsible for performing epidemiologic studies, data collection and analysis, surveillance, and program assessments. This position also performs day-to-day case investigation, follow-up and reporting of foodborne, waterborne, zoonotic, vaccine preventable and respiratory communicable disease incidents, and outbreak investigations to proactively prevent the spread of diseases as well as chronic diseases, accidents, or other public health concerns in the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)

  • Conducts day-to-day investigation, follow-up and reporting of communicable disease incidents.
  • Conducts interviews for case investigation and contact tracing.
  • Determines sources of infection and implements control measures.
  • Plays a lead role in outbreak investigation and compiles reports of outbreak investigation.
  • Conducts case-control and cohort studies, interviews study subjects, and performs other data collection and analysis for special communicable disease projects as assigned.
  • Presents data and facts without incorporating judgement or personal biases into the interpretation.
  • Maintains sensitive and confidential records information. Adheres to strict confidentiality guidelines, including HIPAA and the appropriate non-disclosure and/or release of information.
  • Stays current on relevant public health statutes and regulations
  • Provides technical support and expertise to county staff, local health care providers, and the public regarding communicable disease prevention and control.
  • Works with the Manager of Emergency Preparedness and Disease Surveillance or other Health Department managers to monitor and identify trends and clusters of communicable diseases or other conditions of concern.
  • Develops action plans to address trends and issues.
  • Enter data into several different computer programs; learn and apply new computer skills on a regular basis; and maintain a strong working knowledge of computer programs used daily such as electronic health records, program specific software applications, Microsoft Windows, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Develops line lists, epi curves, basic epi analyses.
  • Maintains informational materials related to communicable diseases.
  • Develops and provides presentations on disease intervention activities and outbreak investigations.
  • Rotates on-call for afterhours illness and outbreak reporting and follow-up.
  • Attends periodic after-hours Board of Health or other community meetings to provide subject matter expertise.


EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE DUTIES:

  • Employee responds, as required, to support public health emergencies, incidents, and events.
  • Employee participates in all exercises and drills on emergency preparedness, as required.
  • Completes trainings identified as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Epidemiologist I:

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university is required.
  • A Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology or biostatistics is preferred.
  • One years' experience performing epidemiology work.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Power BI and/or Tableau preferred.
  • Experience with REDCap preferred.
  • Experience using advanced statistical analysis programs such as SAS, STATA, or SPSS to analyze data is preferred.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.


Epidemiologist II:

  • A Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university in epidemiology, biostatistics, or closely related field, is required.
  • Three years' experience performing epidemiology work.
  • Experience using advanced statistical analysis programs such as SAS, STATA, or SPSS to analyze data is preferred.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

  • This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
