Job Summary

We are currently seeking an Epidemiologist. This position is a full-time opportunity located in Portsmouth, VA, with remote work available.

This role supports Battelle's Health Research and Analytics (HRA) business line in delivering force health protection (FHP) strategies and solutions for a government customer. Core program capabilities include health surveillance, epidemiology and analysis, disease and injury prevention, and public health consultation. The position is embedded within the EpiData Center (EDC), which provides data analysis for public health surveillance covering Navy and Marine Corps members and their dependents across the following areas: diseases, conditions and infections, reportable medical events, deployment health assessments, occupational and environmental exposures, and information technology.

Responsibilities

As an Epidemiologist, the selected individual will conduct epidemiologic scientific and technical analysis in support of disease and injury prevention programs for a government customer. Responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting epidemiological analyses using in-theater, OCONUS, and CONUS military data systems to support biosurveillance activities - collecting, analyzing, and reporting medical and environmental health data that directly contribute to operational decision support
  • Analyzing antimicrobial use and resistance data to inform prevention strategies, stewardship efforts, and policy recommendations
  • Supporting outbreak detection, investigation, and response related to antimicrobial-resistant infections, including coordination with laboratories and healthcare partners
  • Conducting comprehensive investigations to identify and characterize risk factors, assisting in the development of strategies to reduce disease and injury incidence, and evaluating and recommending preventive measures
  • Conducting epidemiological analyses related to injury risk, tuberculosis, influenza, wounded/ill/injured populations, healthcare-associated infections, infectious diseases, mental and behavioral health conditions, deployment-related conditions, and environmental health
  • Performing detailed biostatistical analyses using advanced statistical software (e.g., SAS) on large datasets requiring extensive data cleaning to evaluate epidemiological questions
  • Conducting studies and developing metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of public health programs, disease prevention programs, and health promotion activities in support of data-driven decisions
  • Facilitating cross-functional teams of professional and support personnel to conduct routine and non-routine epidemiologic evaluations

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field with 5 years of epidemiology work experience; or a Master's degree with 2 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two to five years of epidemiology work experience in one or more public health areas, including: health analytics, clinical health surveillance, disease surveillance, biosurveillance, population health, behavioral health, mental health, suicide analysis, deployment health, injury analysis, environmental health, occupational health, industrial hygiene, preventive medicine, medical readiness, acute and chronic disease, health risk assessment, emerging public health threats, or disease investigation
  • Minimum of five years of experience using Statistical Analysis System (SAS)
  • Advanced experience analyzing healthcare data and large, complex datasets
  • Advanced experience applying epidemiological methods for public health surveillance and/or program evaluation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Applicants must be U.S. citizens in order to be considered for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three to eight years of epidemiology work experience strongly preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of public health surveillance monitoring systems
  • Experience conducting surveillance and epidemiological analyses of antimicrobial-resistant organisms (AROs) to identify trends, emerging threats, and risk factors across clinical and community settings
  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating AMR surveillance systems, including data integration from laboratory, clinical, and public health sources
  • Experience with military healthcare system data, including MHS GENESIS laboratory, encounter, and pharmacy data; TMDS; DRSi; eDHA; DMDC; and PDTS
  • Extensive analytical experience with epidemiological data on issues such as injury prevention, tuberculosis, influenza, wounded/ill/injured populations, healthcare-associated infections, infectious disease, mental and behavioral health conditions, deployment-related conditions, and environmental health
  • Experience with SAS DATA Step Processing, SQL Processing, SAS Macro Language, SAS/STAT, SAS/GRAPH, CDISC Standards, and data management with large datasets (ETL)
  • SAS Certified Base Programmer for SAS 9 or SAS Certified Advanced Programmer for SAS 9
  • Experience publishing and presenting findings at state and national conferences

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $81,600 - $116,300 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
