Epidemiologist III (hybrid, local to Anchorage, AK)

This position is hybrid - days throughout the work week will have a combined schedule of both on-site and remote work (local proximity to Anchorage, AK).

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, analyzes and interprets public health surveillance data. Provides technical assistance, statistical analysis, grant writing, research and funding advocacy in one or more epidemiologic specialty areas. Identifies priorities for disease prevention and develops initiatives to improve the health of Alaska Natives.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Epidemiologist

Conducts independent data analysis. Evaluates validity, accuracy, and completeness of existing data; interprets and explains significance and meaning; analyzes multivariate and cluster trends in data analysis results and reports findings and anomalies; identifies gaps or inadequacies and recommends improvements.

Locates, compiles and reviews statewide Alaska Native morbidity and mortality trends. Identifies and analyzes surveillance and other public health data pertinent to various health issues among Alaska Natives; researches, interprets technical data and prepares reports. Disseminates information to tribes, corporations and health agencies.

Assists the Director of the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center (EpiCenter) in developing a tribally operated epidemiology program. Represents the EpiCenter and advocates for Alaska Native health through statewide health committees and coalitions. Updates staff and advisory council on epidemiology developments.

Represents EpiCenter to local, state and federal agencies to support interests in data collection, quality control and information dissemination. Identifies sources of funding and writes grant proposals. Organizes and conducts presentations to tribal health directors, Indian Health Service and other health care providers and related organizations.

Serves as a resource for technical information and responds to requests to identify, advice and direct Alaska Native Health Board, regional health corporations, Indian Health Service and other agencies in existing epidemiological information. Develops plans for research and evaluation of subject area. Submits manuscripts for publication when necessary.

Participates in strategic planning for the EpiCenter and advisory council. Collaborates with director and tribal liaison to ensure the scientific accuracy, timeliness and appropriateness of community education materials; supports the development of lay and community health education materials. Maintains open and collaborative communication with persons involved with epidemiology, and groups that provide native health information at the tribal, state and national levels. Travels occasionally to remote locations.

Senior Epidemiologist

Assists the Director of the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center (ANEC), Deputy Director, or Lead Epidemiologist in developing and maintaining a tribally operated epidemiology program, including managing existing programs and/or developing new programs, the provision of training and technical supervision to other staff including epidemiologists.

Designs and conducts independent data analyses. Evaluate validity, accuracy, and completeness of existing data; interpret and explain significance and meaning; analyze trends in data analysis using appropriate statistical methods; reports findings and anomalies; identifies limitations, and recommends improvements, where appropriate.

Identifies and analyzes surveillance and other public health data relevant to Alaska Native health. Researches, interprets technical data and prepares reports. Develops information products for tribes, tribal health corporations, health agencies, and others, as appropriate. Leads and support the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication on relevant topics.

Provides technical assistance which may include, but is not limited to statistical analysis, grant writing, research and funding advocacy in one or more epidemiologic specialty areas to Tribes, Tribal organizations, or tribal-serving organizations. Identifies priorities for disease prevention and develops initiatives to improve the health of Alaska Natives peoples.

Represents the ANEC and advocates for Alaska Native's health through statewide health committees and coalitions. Represents ANEC to local, state and federal agencies to support interests in data collection, quality control and information dissemination. Identifies sources of funding and writes grant proposals.

Organizes and conducts presentations to Tribes, Tribal health organizations, and others, as requested care providers and related organizations. Develops and maintains collaborative and professional communication with persons involved with epidemiology and groups that provide health information at the tribal, state and national levels, where appropriate.

Lead Epidemiologist

Assists the Director of the Alaska Native Epidemiology Center (ANEC) in developing and maintaining a tribally operated epidemiology program, including the provision of training and technical supervision to less senior epidemiologists. Acts in the Director's absence as requested.

Identifies sources of supplemental funding for ANEC, plans and coordinates responses to competitive grant opportunities, assigns and coordinates the work of other team members in proposal development, and serves as principal writer of applications for funding.

Serves as a resource for technical information and responds to requests to identify, advise and direct regional health organizations, IHS and other agencies in existing epidemiological information. Develops plans for research and evaluation in a variety of subject areas.

Collaborates with ANEC Director to ensure scientific accuracy, timeliness and appropriateness of community health education materials; supports the development of lay and community health education materials. Maintains open and collaborative communication with persons involved with epidemiology and groups that provide native health information at the tribal, state and national levels.

Supports the preparation of peer-reviewed publications for the ANEC. Serves as primary and/or co-author on publications.

Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to professional and technical staff. Develops goals and priorities and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Counsels, trains and coaches staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations. Meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues. Effectively addresses personnel issues in order to promote a productive and healthy work environment.

Senior Epidemiologist / Lead Epidemiologist
• Advanced skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Epidemiologist / Senior Epidemiologist

Master's degree in Epidemiology, or a Master's in Public Health, or related field from an accredited college program. Progressively responsible professional work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

Lead Epidemiologist

Doctorate Degree (PhD) in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, social science, or related field.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Epidemiologist

Non-supervisory - Five (5) years' experience in epidemiologic work or health research in a health care, public health, or academic environment. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience. Senior Epidemiologist Non-supervisory - Eight (8) years' experience in epidemiologic work or health research in a health care, public health, or academic environment. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

TO INCLUDE

Supervisory - Two (2) years' experience involving employee supervision.

Lead Epidemiologist

Non-Supervisory - Ten (10) years of post-doctoral epidemiology or public health related experience. INCLUDING five (5) years as Senior Epidemiologist at ANTHC.

TO INCLUDE

Supervisory - Three (3) years of staff supervision experience within the last five (5) years.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

All

Certification in Basic Life Support required if performing work in a clinical setting.

Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication.

Senior Epidemiologist

Primary authorship in two (2) significant reports or publications in a public health related field

AND

Five (5) presentations at public health related meetings or conference in the past three (3) years.

Lead Epidemiologist

Primary authorship in ten (10) significant reports or publications in a public health related field, with three (3) publications in the past five (5) years.

AND

Ten (10) presentations at public health related meetings or conferences in the past three (3) years.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Doctorate Degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related field.
