Job Description:
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission seeks motivated applicants to the Fish and Wildlife Biologist I position at the Calamus State Fish Hatchery, where they will assist the Hatchery Manager with multiple fish culture and aquatic programs within the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. This is an opportunity to carry out fish culture practices to meet program and agency goals. JOB DUTIES: The primary duties of this position will be related to fisheries production facility activities that include: fish spawning, feeding fish of multiple lots, maintaining associated records, collecting and performing sample counts, and documenting distribution of fish throughout the state; performing treatments for fish disease and aquatic vegetation control as required, maintaining hatchery grounds which include mowing, tree trimming and removal; assist with the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, buildings, grounds and ponds; operating specialized equipment for water quality assessment, chemistry, and laboratory work; operating equipment associated with the production of fish and grounds maintenance to include motor vehicles, motorboats, rotary mowers, riding and push lawn mowers, tractors with front end loaders, back hoes, electric and acetylene welders; participating in public relations providing tours and information to visiting public about the operation of the hatchery and related Commission activities. By assignment, may serve as work leader for temporary and volunteer staff. Assist other work units, which may require travel and stay away from home unit overnight. Attend meetings, seminars, and various training to keep up with Commission and fish culture subjects and technology. Perform other related duties as required. Duties will also include interagency and intra-agency projects and other related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, fish or wildlife management or closely related field of biological science. Experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

Other: Incumbent must acquire an aquatic pesticide applicator's license within the first year of hire.

Work schedule and physical working conditions: 8-hour workday, 40-hour work week, many activities require work outside assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverse weather conditions. Ability to work in hot and cold wet conditions in and around water. May require working alone in remote locations. Able to respond to emergencies quickly and work outside normal work hours. Travel is required for short periods of time to accomplish commission goals and required training.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: General knowledge of fish culture techniques and fisheries management. Ability to operate, maintain and repair various vehicles, power tools, electrical instruments, scientific equipment, sampling gear and fish hatchery equipment. Skill in organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects. Ability to communicate effectively; follow instructions and maintain records. Ability to develop positive personal relationships and become a team member. Ability to assemble, organize and process data by recognized scientific techniques; communicate fisheries concepts to diverse user groups; communicate effectively with the public. Ability to be flexible and creative in response to changing circumstances and directives. Ability to respond to facility requirements at any time, day or night. Ability to lift and move fifty (50) pounds.
