Hybrid Clinical Research Nurse and Infusion Room Nurse - FT/32hrs Per Week
Summary
This role will be a hybrid role split between the Clinical Research Team and our Clinical Infusion Nursing Team.
As a Clinical Infusion Nurse, you will provide professional nursing care for patients following established standards and practices in an Oncology Clinic setting. This role works with a variety of patient populations, including adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and elderly.
As a Clinical Research Nurse, you will support the conduct of clinical trials by providing clinical oversight of research participants, ensuring patient safety, protocol compliance, and high-quality data collection. This role collaborates closely with investigators, clinical research coordinators, and regulatory staff to enhance study efficiency, patient safety, and enrollment.
What You'll Do
For the Research team
• Support patient visits, including treatment, follow-up, and screening visits
• Perform clinical assessments and monitor patients for side effects or changes in condition
• Conduct informed consent discussions and obtain consent from research participants (as delegated)
• Identify, assess, and follow up on adverse events (AEs/SAEs)
• Educate patients on study treatments, side effects, and when to seek care
• Review labs and clinical data for safety and protocol compliance
• Verify patient eligibility, including inclusion/exclusion criteria
• Assist with investigational drug accountability and pharmacy documentation
• Conduct patient follow-up calls to monitor symptoms and treatment tolerance
• Assist with pre-screening and identification of potential study participants
• Support treatment administration (oral and IV) and monitor for reactions
• Ensure accurate clinical documentation and support audit readiness
• Collaborate closely with physicians, treatment room nurses, oral chemo nurses, coordinators, and regulatory staff
For the Infusion Team
• Administers chemotherapy, hydration, and other medications under the direction and supervision of a physician.
• Assists physician with exams and procedures. Maintains appropriate and efficient patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
• Records patient data including, but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, medication changes, etc.
• Maintains disinfection protocols
• Monitors and assesses changes in patient conditions and initiates appropriates actions.
• Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory fusion pump use and maintenance.
• Facilitates dose modification
• Assesses patients for changes in condition, including but not limited to abnormal labs, x-rays, scans, drug reactions
and initiates appropriate actions.
• Maintains knowledge of reimbursement procedures. Completes all chemotherapy charge forms. Assures preauthorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to administration of therapies.
• Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use and maintenance, cleaning pumps after use, and proper documentation of pump usage.
• Facilitates dose modification by assessing patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating
dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptom management.
• Performs venipuncture, accesses implanted ports and maintains central lines catheter devices.
• Administers all medications/blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage/amount, route, time
and technique.
• Displays appropriate technical skills for the administration of chemotherapy, medications and blood products, to
include, but not limited to: venipuncture, central line access and infusion devices.
• Programs portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and provides instruction to the patient and/or caregiver in the use of the pump at home.
• Documents nursing assessments, patient teaching and fluid and medication administration in the patient chart.
• Communicates all pertinent information and any interventions to the physician.
• Assures nursing charges are accurate and complete on patient fee slips.
• Acts as a resource person to the medical assistants.
• Triages patient phone calls as needed and documents relevant information in the patient's chart.
• All other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Alabama
• Clinical experience required (oncology experience preferred)
• Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred, or willing to complete the required training.
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills
• Excellent communication and organizational abilities
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Interest in clinical research (experience preferred but not required)
Schedule & Travel
• Full Time, Flexible schedule, 4-days a week (32 hours), Monday- Friday.
• Example schedules:
o1 day with the Research Team, 3 days with the Infusion Team
o2 days with the Research Team, 2 days with the Infusion Team
o3 days with the Research Team, 1 day with the Infusion Team
• This position will float to all Alabama Oncology locations as needed.
o For days assigned to the research team, this position will primarily be based at St Vincents with travel to any of the other Alabama Oncology sites to support research patients at their treatment visits
oFor days assigned to the infusion room, this position will be located at the Alabama Oncology clinics depending on the needs of the practice.
