Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Laboratory Chemist sets up and supports the department's teaching and research laboratories; procures and organizes chemicals, supplies and equipment; trains and supervises student lab assistants; and performs duties outlined in the department Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Plan.
- Sets up well-organized chemistry teaching laboratories in a timely manner.
- Assesses, retrieves and stores chemicals, supplies and equipment in compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Works with faculty, vendors and the university Purchasing department to procure chemicals and laboratory equipment to effectively meet the needs of department programs.
- Hires, trains and supervises student lab assistants.
- Maintains an up-to-date online inventory of chemicals and carries out duties outlined in the department Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety Plan.
- Manages and implements the department's hazardous waste program.
- Collaborates with faculty to provide effective laboratory support for teaching and research labs.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related discipline.
- Ability to demonstrate mastery of fundamental concepts of general and organic chemistry.
- Exceptional planning and organizational skills and the ability to consistently provide well-organized laboratory equipment and chemicals required for effective teaching.
- Ability to develop expertise in chemical hygiene and waste management.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities quickly and according to best practices.
- Strong personal commitment to mentoring students, working effectively in a team-oriented environment, and sparking enthusiasm for chemistry.
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and vendors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of chemistry work experience, preferably in a laboratory setting.
- Chemistry degree from an ACS-approved program.
