Hours: Generally Monday through Friday8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. but may vary based on operational need; flexibility is aplus.

POSITION SUMMARY:
This is alaboratory technician position for the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS).The primary role of this position is to support the instruction of multiplesections of undergraduate laboratory courses in microbiology and generalbiology. These courses service a rangeof majors across campus including those in the schools of Nursing and HealthSciences. Position duties for laboratory course support are varied and includethose listed under I and II below.

Additionalduties associated with this position may include assistance in the maintenanceof common floor and equipment areas as directed by the DBS Senior LaboratoryTechnician and Department Chair.

The positionwill report to the Department Chair.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
LaboratoriesSet-Up

Preparingreagents and materials for microbiology and general biology laboratories (i.e.,aliquoting, making reagents, racking and sterilizing micropipette tips, etc.).

Media prep,sterilizing media and supplements.

Microbialstrain maintenance.

Setting up andtearing down laboratories (i.e., autoclaving waste, cleaning benches/glassware,etc.).

Ordering itemsfor microbiology laboratories.

Attendingweekly meetings with TAs and/or professors to coordinate teaching labexercises.

Testing andtroubleshooting new protocols for microbiology

Maintaininglaboratory equipment.

MaintainingMellon Hall laboratory rooms

Updatingchemical inventory and equipment inventory for rooms listed above.

Dispose oftoxic chemicals and biological waste in compliance with University policy and procedures.

Animal andplant care and maintenance.

Interact withFacilities Management, Housekeeping, Equipment

Report anylaboratory room problems (i.e., lights out, heating/cooling complaints, leaks,door/lock problems, fume hood malfunctions etc.).

Follow-up onsubsequent repairs for laboratory room problems.

Act as thecontact person for cleaning and maintenance crew.

Facilitatedepartmental package delivery.

Other Duties

Completes other duties as assignedby the laboratory manager and department chair.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related field from an accreditededucational institution along with prior laboratory experience.

Preferredqualifications:
Alternatively, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combinationof experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilitiesrequired to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is notlimited to, the following:

Experience with a variety of microbiology and molecular techniques, a broadknowledge of biology, or any equivalent combination of experience and training,which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform theessential job functions is a plus.

Ability to be responsible and detail oriented;

Ability to work with others in a team environment;

Excellent oral and written communication skills;

Ability toestablish and maintain effective working relationships with the department andUniversity Community.
