Education and Experience: Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field or higher, and four (4) years of professional laboratory experience in high complexity testing.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by date of appointment. Registration as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency by the date of appointment. CLIA High Complexity-G0.2eneral Supervisor qualified within one (1) year of appointment.

General Purpose
Under general supervision, performs high complexity testing and interpretation of a variety of laboratory tests and provides training and technical oversight of laboratory operations.

Typical Duties
Responsible for performing and/or overseeing public health laboratory operations. Involves: Performing and overseeing the full range of procedures in the areas of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, bacteriology, rabies, biological, milk/dairy, and water testing. Ensuring compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act 1988 (CLIA) regulations, and ancillary federal and state guidelines. Instructing medical technicians, residents/interns, and others in equipment use, test slip requirements, etc.
Prepares specimens for analysis, evaluates, and reviews processes. Involves: Checking specimens, preparing reagents, calibrating and operating instruments, performing analyses, correcting malfunctions, calculating results, and validating the data. Ensuring that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained. Evaluates and interprets results based on analysis of the suitability of the specimen, requirements of the requested test, purpose of the study, events of reactivity, test conditions, chemical reactions, instrument function, types and frequency of control procedures, validity of data in relation to the test system and assay procedures, correlation of the test result with other laboratory and/or patient data; and other similar factors. Selects alternative procedures for the correction of errors, applies standard techniques and practices as required. Reviews work reports within 24-48 hrs. for technical correctness and conformity to policy and established requirements. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products, and maintains proper records for quality control reports. Calibrates, validates, standardizes, adjusts, and maintains instruments. Evaluates and recommends new tests to be incorporated into the testing list.
Develops and presents reports. Involves: Performs preanalytical, analytical, and post-analytical evaluations to include requesting new specimens when needed. Selects, performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of non-routine and specialized test procedures using manual and/or instrumental techniques. Obtains analytical data, converts to prescribed units for reporting, and correlates data to verify results. Recognizes and responds to indicators of malfunction, locates and implements corrections. Writes laboratory reports (identifying sample, methods, and results). Reports results in LIS and to appropriate individuals as required by regulatory guidelines.
Supervision of assigned staff. Involves: Scheduling, assigning, instructing, and guiding personnel. Direct and control the types of requests processed and define objectives, deadlines, and priorities. Appraise employee performance. Provide training and development. Enforce personnel, regulations, and work behavior standards firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants and recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, and other employee status changes.
