Team member is responsible for pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, to include order processing, specimen verification, centrifugation, aliquoting, etc. Team member validates and processes specimens delivered to the laboratory, facilitating timely and appropriate specimen preparation for testing. In some departments the team member may be responsible for performing phlebotomy. Team member must be able to make decisions and solve problems, recognizing when to involve leadership support. Team member is responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are followed. Team member will advise and assist in the orientation and training of other personnel on equipment and software, as necessary.
What You'll Do
Laboratory Testing & Quality
• Perform and evaluate waived, moderately complex, and highly complex laboratory analysis on blood and body fluids, including specimen preparation.
• Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
• Perform and evaluate quality control procedures to ensure accurate patient testing.
• Complete competency and proficiency testing to maintain technical skills and regulatory compliance.
• Investigate and resolve testing issues and unusual situations, ensuring patient results are not reported until corrective actions have been completed and systems are functioning properly.
Documentation & Reporting
• Maintain required documentation for laboratory procedures and testing activities.
• Process laboratory requisitions and testing requests.
• Prepare and distribute laboratory reports accurately and efficiently.
Education & Professional Development
• Participate in ongoing educational activities to enhance technical knowledge and laboratory expertise.
• Perform all duties in accordance with regulatory standards and maintain a constant state of survey readiness.
• Assist with the education and training of students from accredited programs and newly hired team members.
Customer Support & Collaboration
• Provide information, assistance, and consultation to physicians, providers, and other requestors.
• Foster collaborative relationships and recognize interdependencies across departments.
• Work closely with team members to achieve patient care and operational goals.
Operations & Process Improvement
• Practice efficient utilization of laboratory supplies and materials.
• Participate in inventory management activities.
• Contribute to process improvement initiatives and workflow enhancements.
• Evaluate and implement new methodologies and procedures as assigned.

• Work collaboratively within a team environment to support patient care and departmental objectives.
• Maintain professional and effective communication with colleagues and leadership.
• Participate in regular department and staff meetings.

• Utilize appropriate motor skills and manual dexterity to safely obtain and manipulate specimens.
• Adhere to all laboratory and organizational safety policies.
• Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment.

What We're Looking For
- Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.
- Experience: One year experience of relevant phlebotomy and/or specimen processing/laboratory experience, CMA or CNA, preferred.
- Licensure/Certification: Phlebotomy Certification from ASCP, ASPT, AMT, NHA or other national accrediting agency as approved by Laboratory Senior Leadership. (Phlebotomy certification is required in facilities where phlebotomy is included as part of job responsibilities), required. *OR* MLA certification from ASCP or CMLA certification from AMT, preferred.
- Additional Skills (required): For facilities where Phlebotomy is a requirement of the role, phlebotomy certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment. Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tasks. Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results. Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations. Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.
