Medical Laboratory Scientist ASCP - Microbiology - Day shift

Summary The Medical Technologist performs laboratory procedures accurately and efficiently in accordance with hospital and departmental policies. Responsibilities span the Pre-Analytic, Analytic, and Post-Analytic phases of laboratory workflow. The role may involve delegating tasks in the absence of a supervisor or lead and must comply with CLIA standards for moderate and high complexity testing.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Performs authorized moderate and high complexity tests requiring appropriate skill and training
  2. Follows procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, and result reporting
  3. Maintains records for proficiency testing and ensures consistency with patient specimen testing
  4. Adheres to quality control policies and documents all related activities and maintenance
  5. Responds appropriately when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels
  6. Identifies and resolves issues affecting test performance or escalates as needed
  7. Documents corrective actions when performance specifications are not met
  8. Produces consistently accurate work and promotes high standards across the team
  9. Communicates clearly and professionally, exercises sound judgment, and adapts tone to audience
  10. Works independently with minimal supervision, follows instructions, and seeks guidance when necessary
  11. Demonstrates technical competency and applies knowledge effectively in daily tasks
  12. Practices safety protocols rigorously and promotes awareness of unsafe practices



Education Requirements Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution Plus one of the following:

  • Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology
  • Completion of a 50-week US military medical laboratory training course with relevant occupational specialty



Experience Minimum of one year full-time clinical laboratory experience

License or Certification ASCP, AMT, or equivalent nationally recognized certification required Examples include Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS or Laboratory Technologist Certification HEW

Knowledge and Skills

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, auto analyzers
  • Proficiency with LIS, keyboarding, calculators, and fax machines
  • Basic computer skills required
