Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Perform a wide variety of testing in the areas of hematology, coagulation, chemistry, urinalysis, and immunoassays.
  • Determine appropriateness of incoming specimens (i.e. timing of specimen collection, potential interference, proper specimen type, etc.).
  • Perform phlebotomy on individuals utilizing proper type of anticoagulants, amount of blood to be drawn, needle and syringe, Vacutainer, butterfly techniques, and labels, as appropriate.
  • Maintain quality control within the clinical laboratory.
  • Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks.
  • Assist in training hospital laboratory personnel, staff and students in the performance of hematology and chemistry tasks and the related quality assurance, instrument maintenance and implications of various results.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

Basic Requirement: Medical Technician

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in a clinical laboratory performing the full range of procedures such as specimen processing, specimen shipping, chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, serology, phlebotomy, immunohematology and/or bacteriology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as medical technology, chemistry, or biology. NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

AND

Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required.
