Medical Technologist (Clinical Laboratory Scientist / Generalist)

We specialize in healthcare, medical staffing, logistics, engineering, administrative, IT, and professional services while maintaining the highest standards of quality, integrity, and regulatory compliance.We are currently seeking highly qualified Medical Technologists (Clinical Laboratory Scientists / Generalist Medical Technologists) to support the Wilmington Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

Position Summary

The Medical Technologist performs comprehensive clinical laboratory testing and provides high-quality laboratory services supporting the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of Veteran patients. This position requires independent judgment, technical expertise, and the ability to perform complex laboratory procedures while complying with all VA, CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and applicable federal regulations.

The selected candidate will rotate through multiple laboratory disciplines and support 24/7 laboratory operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory testing utilizing manual and automated instrumentation.
  • Conduct testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, and Immunohematology.
  • Evaluate laboratory data and verify test accuracy before reporting patient results.
  • Perform quality control procedures and ensure laboratory compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, maintain, and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Analyze abnormal results and perform corrective testing when necessary.
  • Process biological specimens while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Prepare, package, and ship specimens to reference laboratories.
  • Utilize the VA Laboratory Information System (LIS/VISTA) for documentation and result reporting.
  • Identify and immediately report critical laboratory values to healthcare providers.
  • Maintain complete and accurate laboratory documentation.
  • Follow all biosafety, infection prevention, OSHA, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Assist with implementation and validation of new laboratory methods and instrumentation.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate professionally with physicians, nurses, patients, and laboratory staff.
  • Provide excellent customer service to Veterans and healthcare providers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Current Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) certification or equivalent.
  • Current unrestricted professional license or certification issued by any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia (where applicable).
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related laboratory science.
  • Demonstrated experience performing laboratory testing in multiple clinical disciplines.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to use laboratory information systems and computerized medical records.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Previous U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs experience.
  • Hospital laboratory experience.
  • Experience with VISTA/CPRS.
  • Experience working in CAP and CLIA accredited laboratories.
  • Experience performing high-complexity laboratory testing.
  • ASCP Certification (MLS/MT).

Prior to beginning work, candidates must successfully complete:

  • Credentialing and privileging by the Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Background Investigation
  • Fingerprinting
  • Occupational Health Screening
  • Tuberculosis Screening
  • Hepatitis B documentation
  • MMR documentation
  • Varicella documentation
  • Tdap documentation
  • Influenza vaccination or approved declination
  • Additional immunization requirements per VA policy
  • Annual VA Privacy & HIPAA Training
  • VA Information Security Training
  • Laboratory Safety Training
  • Orientation and competency assessments

Work Schedule

This position supports a 24-hour laboratory operation.

Typical shifts include:

  • 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
  • 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM
  • 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM

Weekend, evening, night, and Federal Holiday coverage may be required.

Estimated schedule:

  • Approximately 40 hours per week
  • Six-month contract with potential extension based on Government requirements.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Lift laboratory supplies and specimen containers.
  • Perform repetitive laboratory procedures.
  • Work safely with biological specimens and hazardous materials.
  • Follow infection prevention and laboratory safety protocols.

Work Environment

This position is performed entirely onsite within a clinical laboratory located at the Wilmington VA Medical Center.
