Job Overview:

As a Microbiology Lab Technical Section Lead-MT/MLS, you would be responsible for coordinating and monitoring activities of the technical section(s) and its staff to assure quality technical services, financial accountability, and compliance of all policies and procedures for quality patient care. Acts as a technical consultant to the staff and performs technical procedures in assigned sections. Delegation of responsibilities to Leads may result in specialization into primarily administrative or technical roles. Expectations and responsibilities will be communicated as needed (per Lead or Manager) and during performance review.

  • Job Duties include the following, other duties may be assigned:
    • Monitor the performance of the technical procedures in designated section, including timeliness, validity, and accuracy of test analysis, records, and quality control.
    • Assists with the supervision of the section personnel, such as: Scheduling to ensure adequate coverage; Making work assignments; Interviewing and recommending hiring decisions; Conducts employee performance appraisals; Recommending personnel for retraining; Recommending and assisting with disciplinary actions; Coordinating section continuing education; Monitoring the section competency; Timekeeping and Attendance recordkeeping
    • Coordinate the operation of equipment and instrumentation and resolve issues in a timely manner.
    • Coordinate the performance of instrument maintenance and calibration, including various preventive maintenance checks, cleaning procedures, and replacement of instrument reagents as a routine scheduled event and as dictated by instrument performance and service.
    • Perform and maintain competence on technical procedures, using a variety of instruments, automation and manual procedures to be able to assess and make recommendation for technical and workflow improvements.
    • Conduct periodic reviews to ensure compliance with documentation of technical information, including: Evaluating quality control results and corrective action outliers; Documenting calibration, preventive maintenance, and reagent preparation; Reporting results by lab computer, manual requisition, phone, or fax; Printing and reviewing various lab computer reports; Reviewing and revising section procedure manuals; Assist with compliance of regulatory bodies.
    • Coordinate and assist staff to perform the following tasks required of the section, may include but not limited to the following: Take inventory and order supplies; Review of other than daily Quality control results, taking corrective action as needed; Recommend new methods and equipment; Design and perform new test development; Orient new employees, making recommendations for additional training when needed; Review and update section manuals; Ensure extended preventative maintenance is performed; Evaluate new lot number of reagents; Participate in the competency assessment of others when qualified; Participate in Quality assessment data gathering and activities; Contribute to Lab computer build and testing; Other duties as assigned.
    • Serve on department and hospital committees. Practice compassion in action to actively assist patients, families, visitors and staff.
    • Communicate with pathologists and physicians.
    • Participate in process and quality improvement activities.
    • Comply with all Safety Policies, Standards of Employee Conduct, and Laboratory General, Computer, and Compliance Policies and Procedures.
  • Manager Responsibilities:
    • Act as the Manager in their absence. Directly supervise Laboratory section activities and employees in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

  • JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and must clearly demonstrate each of the competencies listed above. The education/experience, certifications, skills, physical demands, and work environment described below further define requirements associated with this position.

    • Three or more years' experience in the technical section or area of a clinical laboratory. Previous management or supervisory experience helpful. May learn complete scope of duties in one (1) to two (2) years.
    • Must possess effective management and good communication skills.
    • Must understand the use and limitations of diagnostic instruments and specific functions.
    • Must be familiar with all department methods and collection techniques.
    • Must use considerable initiative and judgment to manage personnel and overall workflow.
    • Must be able to work independently and make decisions under pressure while following professional standards and hospital policies.


Required Certifications/Licenses:

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree with specialized training in Medical Technology or directly related field. Certified as a MLS by ASCP and maintains certification while employed.
  • Equivalent to an Associate's Degree with specialized training in Medical Technology or directly related field. Certified as MLT by ASCP and maintains certification while employed.
  • Education required to be registered by American Medical Technologist (AMT) with 2-3 years of similar lab experience.
  • Education required to be registered by the Federal government/ and Human Resources (HHS) with 2-3 years similar lab experience.
  • Proof of education will be required. This proof will be in the form of an authenticated copy of an original diploma or transcripts. Transcripts may be required if further definition of a degree is needed.
