Molecular Biologist (52781)

Position Objective: The Molecular Biologist will provide support services to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases within the National Institutes of Health.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for molecular/structural biology projects, as well as immunogen testing and analysis for an effective HIV vaccine and vaccines for other pathogens. 1
  • Prepare protein probes for B cell sorting and antibody isolation projects. 2
  • Documents research findings and maintains accurate logs and records of all experimental activities and outcomes.
  • Perform B cell sorting using multicolor flow cytometry and single B cell sequencing to identify antibodies of interest. 3
  • Provide expression of viral glycoproteins, antibodies, immunogens and virus-like particles using mammalian expression systems; provide expression of immunogens in alternative expression systems.
  • Provide DNA vector manipulation including expression vector design, DNA/protein sequence analysis, DNA recombination, mutagenesis and plasmid preparation.
  • Provide biochemical analysis of proteins.
  • Maintain and generate stable cell lines.
  • Maintain tissue culture facility (maintenance of cell lines, cell culture mediums and supplies).
  • Work products and documents related to expressing proteins from eukaryotic expression systems.
  • Work products and documents related to maintaining tissue culture facility.
  • Work products and documents related to providing support for molecular/structural biology projects including the design of an effective HIV vaccine; carry out B cell culture.
  • Work products and documents related to providing analysis of proteins.
  • Maintain tissue culture facility (maintenance of cell lines, cell culture mediums and supplies).

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology or similar field
  • Extensive experience with protein purification techniques
  • Hand son experience with biophysical characterization of proteins
  • Experience with biotinylating and fluorescent labeling of protein probes for B cell sorting projects.
  • Experience with B cell isolation, FACS sorting, single B cell sequencing
  • Experience working with mammalian cell culture for production of glycoproteins and antibodies
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of computer science, systems analysis, MS Office, and systems programming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
