Nurse Epidemiologist - Infection Control Nursing - Mount Sinai West - Full Time (Day)

  • Works in collaboration with the site Medical Director of Infection Prevention & Hospital Epidemiologist in managing, designing and implementing an Infection Prevention program at the hospital.

Responsibilities

Clinical/Technical: Demonstrated behaviors which reflect the scientific knowledge, judgement and technical skills of professional nursing with their area of expertise.

  1. Demonstrates ability to perform clinical, technical, service and administrative tasks.
  2. Makes daily rounds and follows up on all cases of suspected or diagnosed communicable diseases.
  3. Acts as a resource person regarding hospital Infection Prevention policy.
  4. Maintains surveillance programs for clean surgery infection rates.
  5. Surveys the incidence and prevalence of infection on selected services following hospitalization.
  6. Participated in in-service education of hospital personnel in matters pertaining to infection prevention.
  7. Performs environmental surveillance of various departments of the hospital and prepares summary reports for review.
  8. Assists in the development of antibiotic reviews.
  9. Reviews EPIC Bugsy (microbiology programs) for surveillance purposes.
  10. Participates in the evaluation of nursing and medical procedures and products applicable to infection prevention.
  11. Collaborated with personnel to assure compliance with the Board of Health Rules and hospital policies regarding prevention and control of infection.
  12. Provides patient teaching and counseling, as needed.
  13. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area.

Organizational/Operational: Behavior demonstrates awareness of philosophy standards, objectives and policies of the Department of Nursing and the Department of Infection Prevention.

  1. Participates in the Department of Nursing Quality Improvement program/activities.
  2. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  3. Assists the Medical Director of the Department of Infection Prevention and the Hospital Epidemiologist in managing the infection prevention program.
  4. Reviews, updates and recommends the development of hospital policies and procedures in order to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, regarding prevention and control of infection.
  5. Maintains a liaison with the Health Department, Bureau of tuberculosis and Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Disease CDC.
  6. Works with Employee Health Service in maintaining a safe environment for patients and personnel.
  7. Communicates pertinent information regarding matters of infection control to Hospital/Nursing Leadership.

Communication/Relationships: Demonstrated ability to work constructively with others.

  1. Demonstrated a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others.
  2. Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the department, hospital staff and extended community.
  3. Serves as a member of the Medical Board Committee on the Prevention and Control of Infection.
  4. Maintains a liaison with the Health Department, Bureau of Tuberculosis and Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Disease CDC.
  5. Works with Employee Health Service (EHS) in maintaining a safe environment for patients and personnel
  6. Communicates pertinent information regarding matters of infection prevention to leadership.
  7. Maintains liaison with other infection prevention practitioners by attending monthly meetings of the Association of Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
  8. Attends administrative and Medical Board Committee meetings, as appropriate or as necessary.
  9. Projects a professional image through behavior, grooming and attire.
  10. May be required to perform additional duties as assigned or perform additional duties when necessary.

Educational/Professional Development

  1. Participates in the developmen of other staff members.
  2. Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and othe relevant learning experiences.
  3. Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements.
  4. Identifies learning strengths and needs.
  5. Utilizes learning resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required - Master's Degree Preferred
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of clinical experience in professional nursing
  • Experience in critical care areas is preferred
  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in New York State
  • Board Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $85.70 - $85.70 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
