Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with radiation oncologists, physician specialists, the chief medical physicist, and the Head of the physics division to deliver exceptional physics services.
- Manage quality control for treatment and imaging units, ensuring precision, safety, and compliance with standards from AAPM, JCAHO, NRC, MDCH, ALARA, and OSHA.
- Guide and support physicists and dosimetrists on complex treatment planning and dosimetry, offering mentorship to foster professional growth and expertise.
- Help integrate innovative technology and treatment methods, keeping our department at the cutting edge of radiation therapy.
- Mentor students and staff, facilitating radiation therapy student competencies and fostering the next generation of professionals.
- Engage in process improvements, policy development for radiation safety, and radiation safety committee activities to uphold top-tier quality and safety standards.
Equipment and Technology:
Our facilities (including sites at Alma, Alpena, Midland, Saginaw and West Branch) are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to deliver the highest level of care in radiation oncology. We use fully equipped TrueBeam linear accelerators for precise and efficient radiation delivery. Our CT simulators are integrated with 4DCT and breath-hold capabilities, enhancing treatment accuracy. The Sun Nuclear QA Suite, including SunCheck and all necessary QA equipment, supports a comprehensive quality assurance program across all treatment units, from output checks to end-to-end testing. Patient data management and treatment planning are facilitated by Aria/Eclipse v18.1, complemented by the Radformation Suite for secondary calculations and plan checks, as well as tools like EZ Fluence and AutoContouring. All systems are equipped with 6 Degree-of-Freedom Couches and Surface Guidance (SGRT) to ensure optimal patient positioning. Additionally, our Linac-based SRS (Stereotactic Radiosurgery using HyperArc) and SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy) programs provide highly precise, non-invasive treatments. Additionally, we offer innovative treatments such as Pluvicto for metastatic prostate cancer and GammaTile therapy for brain tumors, demonstrating our commitment to bringing the latest advancements in radiation oncology to our community.

Certifications and Licensures
ABR: American Board of Radiology
Certification or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology in Radiological Physics or Therapeutic Radiology Physics, or comparable certification by the American College of Medical Physics.
BLS: Basic Life Support
Within 1 month of hire or transfer
Required Education
Master's Degree is Medical Physics required, Ph.D. preferred.
Other Information
The Medical Physicist works closely with the radiation oncologists, chief medical physicist, head of physics
division and department manager to ensure the highest standards of physics services. This includes, but is
not limited to, the overview and quality control of all treatment calculations for treatment; consultation
with radiation oncologists and other physician specialties concerning radiation therapy planning; supervision
of, and consultation with, the physicists and dosimetrists on computer treatment planning and any
associated dosimetry; determination of the radiation output of all radiation therapy treatment units, and all
other duties as they relate to the operation of radiation within the Radiation Oncology departments.
Responsibilities:
(35%)* Oversees all aspects of radiation oncology treatment planning and dosimetry, including indirect
supervision of the physicist associate and medical dosimetrists.
(10%)* Responsible for the quality assurance program in the radiation oncology department. Responsible
for commissioning and acceptance of new radiation oncology equipment.
(30%)* Provides medical physics services in accordance with the highest standards of practices as required
by JCAHO, NRC, MDCH, ALARA, OSHA and other regulatory bodies.
(15)%* Performs the duties and responsibilities of a medical dosimetrist when necessary.
(10%)* Contributes to the development of students in the department(physics, dosimetry, therapy).
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in process improvement activities.
May be asked to rotate to another Radiation Therapy center to cover staff shortages or fluctuations in
patient volume.
Has a thorough understanding of proper billing practices and is able to use site specific office management
system for scheduling and billing.
Assist in the creation of policies and procedures as they relate tothe radiation safety within the radiation
oncology department.
Participate in the radiation safety committee and provide input for high quality and safety for our community
and patients
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS: Experience in high dose rate (HDR), prostate seed, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Gamma Knife and Intensity-modulated radiation therapy( IMRT). Eligible for and completes requirements for all modalities within 2 years of employment.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with others in person and on the telephone.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.
May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.
Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, working interdependently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
