Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Watch Engineer/ Shift Supervisor observes and operates 900 #, 400 #, 135 # steam boilers and their auxiliaries. Must have a thorough knowledge of boilers, piping, and auxiliaries and have a practical knowledge of the control instruments. The position will require the testing, treatment and adjustments to the heater and boilers for proper chemistry.

Position preparation/instruction: Works from verbal and written instructions, governed by special operating procedures received from the Watch Engineer. Otherwise works from standard operating procedures. Exchanges operating information from previous shift and relays it on to relieving shift. Works under the supervision of Watch Engineer who has the responsibility of spot checking this position during each shift. Train persons assigned to them for qualification or advancement to a higher classification. Must practice proper and documentation requirements.

Work Performed:

Operates 900 #, 400 #, and 135 # steam boilers in accordance with standard operating procedures. Observes automatic combustion controls, gauges, and fires. From interpretations of the combustion controls, gauges, and fires, makes adjustments to auxiliaries so as to maintain an efficient fire while holding a steady steam pressure without smoke emissions. Starts, stops and operates all boiler auxiliaries (fans, pumps, etc.) Performs in-process control tests on boiler and heater water. Using the control tests of the water analysis determines the correct amount of chemicals required by the boiler and the heater, and control the feed systems to the test results, and also adjust the blowdowns for proper boiler concentrations. Records data hourly on all equipment and reports any unusual conditions to the Watch Engineer. Is responsible for the proper lubrication of all equipment in the designated area. Is required to remove, clean, and replace burners, when the boiler is on oil. Operates the sootblowers according to the required schedule. Monitors all alarms in the area and reports all abnormalities to the Watch Engineer. Assists the Watch Engineer in the operation of the powerplant. Unpacks, labels, stores, inventory items required for the regular operations and maintenance of the powerplant. Transports material to the points of use as directed. Performs routine and specific housekeeping duties, as assigned by the Watch Engineer, Shift Supervisor or Chief Engineer.

Standard Tasks:

Once per day

Take readings eight times per shift on boilers ( once each hour ). Blow down gauge glass and water column at the start of each shift. Check and lubricate all equipment under the O.E. 2 jurisdiction. Clean area equipment and area each shift and remove any accumulated debris. Blow soot as required per schedule. Perform required water tests on scheduled shift. Calibrate and check PH and Conductivity meters as needed.

Once per week

Give each boiler a bottom blow Saturday 8-4 shift, log on log sheet. Blow soot on boilers which are on gas on Monday 12 mid to 8 am shift. Gather up oily rags in proper waste containers and prepare for pickup. Check required operating inventories and notify Watch Engineer of low levels. Check biopacks as assigned. Change over equipment (per rotation to standardize operating times).

As needed

Receive fuel oil deliveries Warm up and place boilers in service. Take boilers offline Assist Watch Engineer in various testing of boilers and securing boilers for inspection. Follow cGMP guidelines. Follow documentation guidelines.

Minimum Education Requirement:

  • High School Diploma /GED



Required experience and skills:

  • NJ Blue Seal (1-C) 3rd Class Engineer License or Higher
  • Previous powerplant operating experience.



Shift/Schedule:

  • Successful candidate must be able and willing to work a rotating shift schedule
