Principle Scientist, Protein Engineering & Biotherapeutic Discovery
ROLE SUMMARY
Pfizer's Biotherapeutic Discovery group in La Jolla is seeking an outstanding, highly motivated, and proven protein engineering expert. The candidate will be responsible for developing biologics, with a primary focus on engineering next-generation biologics and hit identification/lead optimization of antibodies. Additionally, the candidate will work closely with individuals in both protein engineering and biology groups to innovate and develop the next generation of protein therapeutics. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art protein and antibody engineering technologies and will be expected to continue our tradition of developing world-class methods and technologies that enhance our therapeutic discovery efforts.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage with therapeutic areas to design and apply new antibody MOAs at the interface of biology and molecular engineering.
- Carry out hands-on lab work to apply protein engineering principles to the generation of novel protein therapeutics.
- Conduct antibody discovery against challenging membrane targets.
- Work in teams to develop next-generation therapeutics and influence project teams in their decision-making.
- Stay informed with literature and scientific advancement in the biologics discovery and engineering field.
- Present experimental designs and results at internal and cross-function team meetings.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Ph.D. in Biological Science (Structural Biology, Protein Biochemistry, Molecular Biology) required.
- Minimum 5 years post-graduate experience in academia or industry.
- Proven scientific achievements through publications or intellectual property.
- Extensive technical skills in protein expression, purification, molecular biology, and structure-function relationships.
- Proficient hands-on experience in protein/antibody engineering and structural biology.
- Strong understanding of antibody structure/sequence and antibody behavior/function relationship.
- Experience in antibody discovery projects.
- Innovative with a successful record in biologics design, creative problem-solving, and strong analytical skills.
- Collaborative scientist with broad interests, diverse background, and ability to work across disciplines.
- Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and oral communication skills.
- Capable of analyzing and applying relevant published work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Antibody discovery against difficult membrane targets.
- Expertise in membrane protein production.
- Motivated to understand biology and innovate new protein-based therapeutics.
- Strategic thinking with an ability to understand program and therapeutic area needs and translate that understanding into an actionable approach.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $102,900.00 to $171,500.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 15.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
