Primary Purpose of Position

North Carolina A& State University (NC A&T) is soliciting applications for the position of the RCMI Clinical Research Associate/ Lab Manager. The RCMI positions will support the successful implementation, administration, operations of a health disparities research center funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under the Research Centers at Minority Institutions (RCMI) mechanism. The RCMI at NC A&T will initially focus on brain health and cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders.

The RCMI Clinical Research Associate / Lab Manager plays a central operational and scientific role in executing a high-impact, multidisciplinary research project investigating how gut microbiota composition and intestinal permeability mediate early cardiometabolic pathophysiology and risk factors across the Alzheimer's Disease (AD) continuum. Supported by an NIH R01 subaward under the NCAT Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) mechanism, this position integrates high-level clinical research data collection, laboratory operations oversight, and personnel training.

The CardioMetabolic eXercise Laboratory (CMX-Lab) conducts cutting-edge translational human research in collaboration with nanoengineering and microbiota experts. Focusing on a stratified-risk cohort of 200 participants from underrepresented populations in the greater Greensboro region, the lab uses gold-standard physiological techniques to unpack the complex connections between metabolic flexibility, microvascular blood flow, leaky gut biomarkers, and neurocognitive decline.

The incumbent is expected to contribute to a culture of excellence, innovation, collaboration, and community engagement while supporting the growth and sustainability of the RCMI Center as a nationally recognized leader in health disparities research, research capacity development, and health equality advancement.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

N.C. A&T is a public, land-grant, doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade and was recognized at the number 1 public HBCU by Forbes in 2026. With an enrollment of over 15,700 students in Fall 2026, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in STEM bachelor's degree graduates, including Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism. It also ranks no. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, no. 4 in master's degrees in engineering, and no. 11 best business school for women in the nation.

Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as "R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve "R1-Very High Research Activity" status. It also holds Carnegie's earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. The Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The College offers the following undergraduate degree programs; Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, the College offers five graduate degree programs including the Master in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and PhD in Social Work, PhD in Applied Psychology, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health disparities. Establishment of the NIH-funded Research Centers at Minority Institutions (RCMI) is also underway with an initial focus on brain-health associated health disparities research and community engagement. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Center is housed within the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences and serves as a hub for multidisciplinary team-science driven health disparities research. The goals for the RCMI at NC A&T include enhancing research infrastructure, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations, supporting investigator development, and engaging with underserved communities in research and promoting the adoption of emerging technologies to alleviate health disparities. Through partnerships with faculty, students, healthcare organizations, community stakeholders, government agencies, and academic collaborators, the Center serves as a catalyst for scientific discovery and innovation while supporting the University's strategic goals of increasing research capacity, expanding extramural funding, developing future research leaders, and improving health outcomes in North Carolina and beyond.

Minimum Requirements

Master's degree (MS/MSN) in kinesiology, exercise physiology, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, or a closely related human health-science discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of direct experience in human-subject data collection, clinical trial coordination, or human physiology laboratory operations.

A combination of a relevant Bachelor's degree and extensive specialized clinical data collection experience may be considered.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Advanced Degree: PhD in Exercise Physiology, Metabolic Endocrinology, Cardiovascular Sciences, or a related clinical research discipline.

Advanced Technical Skills:

  • Proven proficiency placing IV lines, drawing blood, and handling BSL-2 human specimen processing (centrifugation, aliquoting).
  • Technical experience with microfluidics, basic bench assays, or running ELISA biomarker kits.
  • Highly proficient with electronic data entry software, specifically REDCap or Qualtrics database systems.
  • Familiarity with clinical regulatory processes, executing IRB updates, and working with statistical packages (SPSS, SAS, R) [0.1.147; cite: 11].
