ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: The Reconfigurable Space Computing Lab (RSCL) at Cal Poly Pomona, directed by Dr. Mohamed El-Hadedy in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (College of Engineering), conducts research at the intersection of reconfigurable hardware, embedded systems, and autonomous aerial platforms. The lab is currently advancing work in drone simulation and hardware/software emulation environments for next-generation unmanned aerial systems (UAS), edge AI, and secure space computing applications.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Mohamed El-Hadedy) and Co-Principal Investigator, the Drone Simulation & Emulator Coordinator is responsible for supporting the technical and operational objectives of RSCL's drone simulation and emulator research activities. Typical duties include:

  • Configuring, running, and maintaining drone simulation environments (e.g., Gazebo, AirSim, jMAVSim, PX4 SITL) and FPGA/SoC-based hardware emulators
  • Developing and testing flight scenarios, sensor models, and mission profiles
  • Assisting with integration of autopilot software stacks (e.g., PX4, ArduPilot) and ROS/ROS2
  • Supporting hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) Experiments
  • Documenting procedures, test results, and benchmarks; assisting with recruitment and supervision of student researchers
  • Coordinating project objectives and timelines; meeting regularly with the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator
  • Maintaining effective communication with project stakeholders to support project implementation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field, with related experience in drone simulation, embedded systems, or hardware emulation.
  • Working knowledge of one or more drone simulation platforms (e.g., Gazebo, AirSim, PX4 SITL, jMAVSim, Webots) and familiarity with autopilot stacks such as PX4 or ArduPilot.
  • Proficiency in programming and scripting (e.g., Python, C/C++, MATLAB) and experience working in Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with FPGA/SoC-based emulation, ROS/ROS2, or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing is highly desirable.
  • Ability to use business software including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and standard Internet tools.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing.
