This position serves as a Without Compensation Research Biological Laboratory Technician within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). The VA Research Program strives to promote Veteran-centered care to improve patient experiences and outcomes across VA healthcare and community settings, and to advance value-driven care by providing Veterans the highest quality care at the lowest financial burden.

Duties
Help
- Independently conducting experiments, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Implementing standard lab techniques, in protocol.
- Optimizing and troubleshooting existing protocols through literature search and colleague communication.
- Using animal tissues and cell culture in approved methods.
- Training undergraduate students and collaborating with team members under Principal Investigator oversight.
- Participating in statistical data analysis and communication of findings
- Preparation of abstracts, posters, and manuscripts.
Work Schedule: Full time; Monday - Friday; 8:00am- 4:30pm (Without compensation)

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/15/2026.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below. This Without Compensation position is equivalent to GS-6.
- Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: contributing to laboratory operations through data documentation, scientific writing, teaching assistance, and lab organization/management; assisting in laboratory research involving cell culture, vascular tissue analysis, and molecular biology techniques to support biological and physiological studies. OR,
- Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have graduate education or an internship directly related to the work of the position. OR,
- Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education that equals 100%, when the percentage of experience and education are combined.
AND
Individual Occupational Requirement:
Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
- Research activity or control program work.
- Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.
- Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.
AND
Selective Placement Factor: Experience carrying out computational chemistry tasks such as conformational analysis.
