Job Description
The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (IHC) is seeking a highly skilled and mission-driven Senior Biomedical Informatics Scientist to support enterprise-level biomedical informatics initiatives. This role will serve as the on-campus lead for operational execution of research data platforms, clinical informatics systems, and translational research support, acting as the primary liaison between faculty, research teams, reporting to the Senior Manager, Research Informatics Operations, both under the guidance and direction of the Senior Director of Research Informatics.
This position is ideal for experienced professionals with strong backgrounds in healthcare data systems and project management who thrive in collaborative, fast-paced environments and are passionate about improving health outcomes through data-driven research.

- Serve as the on-site operational program lead for clinical research informatics projects, ensuring prioritization and alignment with strategic goals set by the Senior Director and IHC leadership.
- Lead the design, validation, and continuous improvement of informatics solutions. Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to ensure scalable, accurate, and business-aligned models. Champion data integrity, model validation, and methodological innovation.
- Work closely with IT, Data Integration, and Data Science teams to align infrastructure development efforts with business objectives and ensure insights are relevant and actionable. Support the IHC in its collaborations with external partners, and other Institutes and Centers on campus.
- Identify opportunities to expand the capabilities of the Research Informatics Core. Manage day-to-day activities of data platform development, and supervise cross-functional teams of analysts, developers, and engineers in agile environments to deliver secure, scalable informatics solutions.
- Mentor Research Informatics staff in both technical and soft skills to craft a team of highly competent, consistent, thoughtful, and customer-centric technology experts. Foster a culture of collaboration, problem solving, innovation, continuous learning, and a one team mindset.
- Support grant submissions, academic publications, and collaborative research efforts with internal and external partners.
- Represent the IHC Research Informatics Core in campus meetings, working groups, and strategic planning sessions.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Master's or PhD in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, Public Health, or related field, or MD with relevant experience
- 5+ years of experience in clinical research informatics, data management, or health IT
- Prior contributions to peer-reviewed publications or national informatics initiatives
- Prior contributions to federal funding grant applications (e.g. NIH R01)
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and lead technical teams
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in clinical research informatics, data management, or health IT
- Strong understanding of interoperability standards (OMOP, FHIR, HL7) and data governance frameworks
- Certifications such as PMP, AHIC or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Experience with genomic data integration and precision medicine platforms.
- Familiarity with academic medical center environments and multisite research coordination.
- Experience working within HIPAA-compliant and other highly confidential data environments
- Experience working in an academic core service or support service
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, attention to detail and accuracy, and strong inter-personal skills
- Ability to communicate with cross functional teams throughout SDLC lifecycle, ability to support development of BI dashboards and reports, and data analytic initiatives
- Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Advanced skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint.).
