Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist - UPMC Community Osteopathic
Purpose of the Sr Medical Laboratory Scientist:
Assure compliance with the UPMC mission and values for providing service excellence. Provide authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory testing of a routine and advanced nature. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes
Responsibilities:
- Maintains a solid/strong or higher rating (preferred) during annual Performance Appraisals, with no Marginal ratings. No corrective actions active.
- Mentors new hires as assigned.
- Able to competently perform testing in a minimum of 85% of the available test systems / workstations of the assigned technical area. Preferable to be proficient in 100%.
- Participates in hospital committees and lab work groups.
- All duties of a Medical Technologist.
- Leads quality / process improvement activities, as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager, or Director.
- Able to assume additional responsibilities as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager, or Director.
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge and expert performance in at least one technical section in the assigned department.
- Acts as a consultative resource for new employees.
- Completes assigned projects in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Technology program, AND at least two years experience in a clinical lab
- OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, AND at least two years experience in a clinical lab
- OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least four years experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MT) in a clinical laboratory
- OR equivalent education and as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing with at least four years experience in a clinical lab.
- Minimum of two years general laboratory experience if accredited*, including one years experience in the host laboratory required.
- Four years experience in a clinical lab required in the absence of certification, including two years experience in the host laboratory.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
*ASCP (or equivalent) certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) preferred. New York license required for NY locations. - Act 34
