The Opportunity
Civil, Environmental, and Transportation Interns: Tetra Tech is seeking engineering interns to support our Municipal and Transportation teams. This opportunity provides hands-on exposure to a variety of public infrastructure projects while working alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project managers.
Depending on your interests and project needs, you may support municipal water and wastewater infrastructure, environmental and permitting-related work, or transportation projects. Typical assignments may include collection and conveyance systems, pump stations, storage and treatment facilities, infrastructure rehabilitation, roadway improvements, drainage, and other municipal and transportation projects.
As an intern, you will gain practical engineering experience while contributing to projects that help communities improve aging infrastructure, enhance mobility, protect water resources, and develop safe, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure solutions.

Position Summary
As an Engineering Intern, you will work closely with technical staff to support the planning, design, and delivery of civil, environmental, municipal, water/wastewater, and transportation projects. You will gain exposure to engineering calculations, design development, construction documents, permitting, and field activities while developing practical skills that complement your academic coursework.
Essential Functions
- Support the planning, design, and permitting of civil, environmental, municipal, water/wastewater, and transportation projects.
- Assist with engineering calculations, analyses, and technical evaluations under the direction of experienced engineering staff.
- Assist in preparing engineering reports, technical memoranda, and supporting documentation.
- Support the development of construction drawings, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
- Assist with CAD and design-related tasks using AutoCAD Civil 3D or other engineering software, as applicable.
- Coordinate with engineers, designers, project managers, and other technical disciplines.
- Participate in project meetings, field visits, and site investigations as needed.
- Perform work in accordance with applicable engineering standards, project requirements, and established quality procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Junior or senior standing preferred.
- Strong interest in municipal infrastructure, water/wastewater, environmental, or transportation engineering.
- Basic understanding of engineering principles through academic coursework.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, or other engineering/design software is preferred but not required.
- Strong written, verbal, analytical, and organizational skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform office-based work involving extended periods of sitting and computer use.
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, stoop, or navigate active project and construction sites.
- Ability to safely access project sites that may include uneven terrain, stairs, ladders, or active construction areas.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment, plans, or materials typically weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to travel locally to client, project, and field locations as required.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors
- This position will primarily work in a professional office environment with regular use of computers and standard office equipment.
- Periodic fieldwork and site visits may be required. Field assignments may involve exposure to outdoor weather conditions, uneven terrain, construction activities, operating water or wastewater facilities, noise, dust, odors, and other conditions typical of infrastructure and construction environments.
- Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided and required when working in designated field or construction environments.
- The position may require occasional local travel to project sites, client facilities, or other Tetra Tech locations.
